Sewer Reconstruction

A contractor for the Town of Herndon will be rehabilitating the sewer system starting Aug. 29 until the project is complete. Restoration is required to meet current standards and eliminate maintenance problems. The construction will be conducted Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Effort will be made to complete this program with minimal inconvenience to residents and motorists. Contact the Department of Public Works at 703-435-6860 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

Jimmy's Tavern Events

Jimmy's annual Motorcycle Poker Run and Outdoor Pig Roast is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 4.

Registration for the run begins at 9:30 a.m. and the ride leaves at 10:30 a.m. The event is $20 per rider and includes a continental breakfast, raffle ticket, a ride, pig roast buffet and more. There will be prizes for the "Top Three Hands."

The pig buffet includes Ara's slow-cooked pig, baked beans, slaw, potato salad, corn-on-the-cob, Jimmy's BBQ sauce and more. Outdoor seating and All-U-Can Eat is $12 for adult, $6 for children. Food will be available from 4 p.m. until the "pig has left the building."

Live music will also being in the alley at 4 p.m. and will move indoors at 9 p.m. until closing at 1:30 a.m. No cover.

Poker Run prizes will be awarded at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the run benefit the Firefighters' Fund of Fairfax County.

September Chamber Events

A Digital Makeover event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Panel discussions and exhibits will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a mixer will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Center for Innovative Technology, 2214 Rock Hill Road in Herndon. Tutors Needed

Vecinos Unidos/Neighbors United of Herndon is in need of volunteer tutors for the upcoming school year to assist elementary- and middle-school-age students with homework. Tutors are needed — youth age 16 and up are welcome — at its two Herndon sites Monday through Thursday, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. or 4-6 p.m. Call 703-376-8475 or e-mail herndonsafehaven@cox.net.

Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival

This annual event features a wide range of live jazz, Virginia wineries, a fine arts show and great food. Held Monday, Sept. 5, from noon-6 p.m., at the Herndon Municipal Center complex, admission is $3 or $15 with wine tasting. New this year is a second stage of acoustic blues and jazz.

Gas Line Relocation Expands

Gas line relocation in advance of an upcoming Town project is still blocking portions of Monroe Street between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., daily Monday through Friday. Local traffic can access Monroe Street via Jefferson or Madison Streets. Detours will be designated, and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays. Special Planning Commission Meetings

The Planning Commission will host a community meeting Thursday, Sept. 15 to explain the draft ordinance that is taking shape and to hear from citizens about proposed zoning provisions. A map showing new names for many districts is also scheduled to be presented.

This ordinance provides regulations for new development, redevelopment, infill development, home occupations, placement of decks and accessory structures, and many other things. As town staff and commissioners review the zoning ordinance, they welcome comments and opinions. You may express your views in public meetings, or by submitting written comments to the Herndon Department of Community Development, P. O. Box 427, Herndon, Virginia, 20172-0427, or by calling the Herndon Department of Community Development at 703-787-7380.

The meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 765 Lynn Street. The meeting will be open for resident questions and comments.
