Brief: Arlington Senior Olympians Awarded

94 Gold, 68 Silver, 41 Bronze.

In the recently concluded Northern Virginia Senior Olympics several long standing records were broken. Participation was the highest in its 30-year history and the highest number of events — 40 — were offered. It was also a bonus year for Arlington which celebrated a 20 percent increase in participation and the largest number of medals awarded. The total medal count was 94 Gold, 68 Silver and 41 Bronze.

Herndon High Wind Ensemble Honored in Norfolk

On Nov. 20, the Herndon High School Wind Ensemble, comprising 81 students, performed at the 2014 Virginia Music Educators Association (“VMEA”) In-Service Conference in Norfolk. After Herndon High Director of Bands Kathleen Jacoby submitted a recording of the Wind Ensemble state assessment performance to the VMEA last Spring, the Wind Ensemble was one of only three high school bands selected to perform for over 400 music educators from across the state of Virginia.

Thomas A. Weaver died suddenly on Aug. 20, 2014, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida. Born May 27, 1959, in Lutcher, La., the son of Simone (Pomainville) Barbara and the stepson of John F. Barbara Jr. He was a graduate of Destrehan High School and Delgado Culinary School.

Churchill Road Science Olympiad Team Wins First Place at the Regional Tournament

The Churchill Road Elementary School Science Olympiad team turned in a fabulous performance at the Virginia Science Olympiad Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 1, at Madison High School in Vienna. Competing against 20 other teams from area elementary and middle schools, Churchill Road’s team won First Place. The school’s fifth and sixth graders competed against other fifth and sixth graders, as well as seventh and eighth graders, in science topics that included Life Science, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Technology and Inquiry and Nature of Science. CRS students placed in the top five in 14 events, and they placed in the top 10 in most other events.
