Mount Vernon: Expanding Fort Belvoir Elementary
When Fort Belvoir Elementary School opens in 2016, an expanded campus will provide a base institution for all school-aged children of Fort Belvoir families. The expansion includes 20 general education classrooms, bringing the population capacity to 1,594 students, according to a release from Fairfax County Public Schools.

Alexandria Brief: ‘At Large’ Representative Sought for Fort Ward
The Fort Ward Management Plan Implementation Monitoring Group is now accepting nominations for an “at large” representative. On July 11, City Manager Mark Jinks announced that nominations could be submitted to Julie Fuerth at julie.fuerth@alexandriava.gov by July 20.
Floris Elementary Chess Team Wins Silver Knights Cup
Floris Elementary students competed in the third annual Silver Knights Cup chess tournament recently and won top school in the competition. The top four scorers from each school were taken to calculate school placements; from Floris, the top scorers were Ray Shen, Mantra Vivek, Anand Vinod, and Jonathan Tong. More than 220 students from 20 schools participated in the tournament in one of four sections: K-1, K-3, K-5, and K-8. Other Floris students who competed were Connor Whiting, Alec Riso, Aditya Kakkar, Vikas Nanduri, Shrey Papneja, Shiven Chokshi, Sumanth Ratna, Sri Kapa, Krish Sahoo, Yashwant Kapa, Shivam Papneja, Yash Sahoo, Maria Izzi, and Zahra Izzi.

Black Lives Matter Banner in Reston Stolen – Again
The Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston (UUCR) discovered on Thursday, May 20, that the Black Lives Matter banner that they fly at the entrance of their property on a major street in Reston, had been stolen – for the third time in the past year.
