I-95 Total Overnight HOV Closure

The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the I-95 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on Friday night, April 13 at 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday morning April 14, between Exit 169 Franconia Road /Keene Mill Road (Route 644) and Exit 152 Dumfries Road (Route 234).

12-under team trades pins with players from other states.

The Reston Raiders won their first game, 4-2, over a team from Arizona at the USA Hockey 12 and Under Tier II National Championships, which ran March 28 through April 1 at the twin rink Ashburn Ice House and SkateQuest Reston facilities.

Local Youth Re-enact Historic Pioneer Trek

More than 200 teenagers and adult advisors from the Centreville Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — which includes Centreville, Manassas, Gainesville, Warrenton and surrounding areas — re-enacted the trek of 19th-century Mormon pioneers during a three-day youth conference, July 18-20, at the Marriott Ranch in Hume, Va.

Working Together in Richmond Highway Clean-up

Volunteers met on a cold Saturday morning on April 20 at the Candlewood Suites on Richmond Highway to begin the annual “Spring Clean” of Richmond Highway that collected more than 70 bags of trash.

The 10-week Alexandria Police Citizens Academy provides an opportunity for residents to learn about various aspects of the Police Department, such as administrative philosophy, internal policies and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services. Classes are a combination of lecture and interactive activities. Class topics will include patrol operations, gangs, crime prevention, crime scene investigations, criminal investigations and the Special Operations Team.

Jill Lehman of the Rotary Club of Fairfax recently spent six weeks in Saint-Louis, Senegal, helping mentally disabled children and visiting the Rotary Club of Senegal, a small club of 20 members who are very active in their community. 

Mountain View Teacher Hoffman Is Honored

Mountain View High math teacher Anne Hoffman received the Educator of the Year award Saturday from the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce. She was honored during the opening ceremonies of the Oct. 20 Centreville Day celebration in Centreville’s Historic District. Mountain View Principal Dave Jagels presented her award; but first, he told those attending why Hoffman is so special and why the school chose her to receive this honor.

Trio rocks Hard Times Café.

After a 20-year absence in Alexandria, the female trio of Huxtable, Christensen and Hood took to the stage Sept. 8, performing to a capacity crowd at Hard Times Café in Old Town. Cheering on the group were Hard Times founders and brothers Jim and Fred Parker, husband of vocalist Carol Christensen, along with their sons Ned and Jonathan Parker. “I think I'm the only Parker without any musical talent,” laughed Ned Parker, whose brother Jonathan is a professional jazz saxophonist. “I guess that's why I'm taking the tickets at the door.”

Letter: Encourage Green Growth

The city has adopted a plan to reduce greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming by 20 percent by the year 2020, as compared to 2005 levels. At that time, 25 percent of the energy is supposed to be generated by renewable sources like solar or geothermal. The targets for 2050 are much higher: an 80 percent drop in greenhouse gas emissions (like carbon dioxide from coal fired electricity) and an equivalent increase in the amount of our energy derived from cleaner renewable sources.

Kiwanis Conducts Service Leadership Programs Night

The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club hosted a Service Leadership Programs Night at the Mount Vernon Country Club on Feb 20, which featured presentations from young men, women and students involved in community service and leadership activities at schools in the area. Attending the event were local school administrators, educators, principals, and advisors such as Deborah Tyler, Fairfax Country Public Schools Cluster IV assistant superintendent; Principal Nardos King, Mount Vernon High School; Principal Cliff Hardison, West Potomac High School; Principal Maura Caulfield, Stratford Landing Elementary School; Assistant Principal Kaaren Lowder, South County High School; and Kim Taylor-Wilson, acting coordinator of Student Services at Northern Virginia Community College. Students in attendance were youth leaders in their Kiwanis family of clubs including Circle K International, Key Clubs, Builders Club, and K-Kids.
