Footsteps of Reston is Leaving South Lakes Center

The oldest existing running specialty store in Northern Virginia is leaving South Lakes Shopping Center in Reston to look for a new home. Footsteps owner Paul Zink started the business in 1987, opening his first store in Springfield on April 15, 1988, as a Fleet Feet franchise. In 1995 he started independently owned Footsteps of Reston at South Lakes Center and along with Safeway and CVS, Footsteps has been the longest existing business in the center.

A recent reopening of a Potomac restaurant in a location outside of Potomac Village is a sign of the local business climate, says real estate expert David D. Freishtat. But he greatly overstates his case. Yes, the Patent Office contributes to the city's tax rolls, but no, it doesn't stimulate economic activity in the surrounding area.

Why 30 Minutes Only?

To the Editor: Hunter Woods shopping Center marked new parking restrictions for the spaces directly across the stores on the left side nearest the RCC. The spaces are marked: 30 minutes only. This rule is quite incongruent with the merchants located there. When one dines at Ledo Pizza, you can expect more than 30 minutes to get and eat a good hot pizza. It takes more than 30 minutes to be served and chew and swallow meals at Hunan Café. Nail and Spa requires more than 30 minutes for a manicure or pedicure, not to mention both. Tanning needs more time for the entire procedure. The Buffalo Wing Factory has patrons staying more than 30 minutes. And I would guess Mathnasium has programs that require more than 30 minutes. To be fair, one can take out to go from Ledo Pizza or Hunan Café and that discourages patrons from enjoying a sit down meal in either place. So for whom are these spaces meant please? Letter: Safety for Cyclists Appreciated

I am a newly returning resident to Alexandria. I live just off King Street near T.C. Williams High School. An avid bicycle commuter since 1999 (NOVA and other areas), I looked forward to returning. Many days I ride the entire route to work, but also ride to the metro. While I live closest to the King Street Metro, after a few close calls and preferring not to ride the sidewalk, which is for pedestrians, I changed my route to the Braddock Road Metro instead. It is a longer route, but one that is safer for cyclists.

Snow and Tail

I am the human member of our own community center. It is called the barn. I share it with three Arabian mares, some winter birds, and too many mice. On snowy mornings, like the ones in these photos, I must traverse a too steep slope to feed some very impatient horses. I start the journey armed with my pitchfork poised like a staff for balance. While breakfast satisfies the hungry muzzles stretched toward me, I grab a hammer and begin to crack the ice in their water buckets. These are not average barn buckets. They are bright yellow and hang in each stall like spring daffodils blooming on the end of a double snap. Actually, they must be art because I found them at MOMA in New York City. I still wonder how buckets for horses could find their way into a museum shop but, they were spectacular and now they are mine.
