Brief: Memorial Fund To Honor Lawson
For the last 20 years, The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer has helped support mammograms and other diagnostic screening for Alexandria women who are uninsured or not adequately insured. To honor the Walk’s founder, Vola Lawson, who died in December 2013, the Walk will be renamed. A fund has been created in her memory, the Vola Lawson Breast Cancer Memorial Fund. Since its inception in 1994, the Walk has helped more than 8,000 uninsured Alexandria women receive free mammograms and other diagnostic screenings.
Starshine Theatre to Present ‘The Odyssey’
Starshine Theatre of Great Falls presents its 21st Annual Spring Production, "The Odyssey," based on the ancient Greek epic by Homer. A Cast of talented local students, ages elementary through high school, will portray the colorful characters the great Odysseus met on his 20-year journey home after winning the Trojan War. This original musical drama includes songs and dance/action choreography to complement the epic scholars have called "The best story in 3,000 years." 25th Annual Taste of Arlington
Foot traffic filled the roadway Sunday, May 20 on Wilson Boulevard at Ballston for the 25th annual Taste of Arlington. More than 35 restaurants and bakeries offered samples to the hundred of visitors strolling up and down the boulevard. Stuart Street at Wilson was set aside as the kidszone with games, face painting, moon bounces, wall scaling and jumpworks. At 1 p.m. food judges began sampling the food for the best of prizes. Best appetizer was awarded to P.F. Chang. Burger Shack received the nod for best entrÈe and best dessert went to Bayou Bakery. Proceeds for the street festival are donated to the Arlington Community Foundation, Virginia Hospital Center and the Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic.
Serial Armed Robber from Burke Convicted
Burke resident Larry Pyos, Jr was convicted Thursday, Oct. 20 on charges linked to several armed robberies that took place around Fairfax County, a release from the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
Sergeant Pamela Juelharte Retires from the Vienna Police Department
On Sept. 22, 2020, a ceremony was held at the Vienna Community Center to celebrate the retirement of Sergeant Pamela Juelharte, who retires with 20 years of dedicated service with the Town of Vienna Police Department.
Springfield Military Athlete Competes in World Orienteering Championships
Hannah Culberg, a First Lieutenant in the US Army and Springfield resident, is set to compete for Team USA in the Nokia Tyres World Orienteering Championships. The competition will take place in Stromstad-Tanum, Sweden, August 20-28.
Stand-off Ends through Negotiation
Sully Police District officers were called to a home in the 11900 block of Henderson Court shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22 for the report of a 20-year-old man experiencing emotional distress, possibly armed with a handgun and allegedly threatening to harm himself.
