Bat Or Award Presented to Chantilly Scout
Madeleine LeBeau, a member of local Junior Girl Scout Troop 6730, received the Bat Or (Daughter of Light) Award in a ceremony at Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, on Friday, April 20.
Important Balance
To the Editor: As I head to the polls on Nov. 6, there is one candidate who will surely get my vote, and I encourage other Alexandrians to do the same. First term Councilman Frank Fannon has been a true asset to the City Council over the past three years. Fannon is a lifelong Alexandrian who has worked and been involved in civic life for over 20 years. He brings an important balance that is needed in local government. He is a straight shooter, sticks to the point and is realistic about the issues facing Alexandria.

Father’s Day at Colvin Run Mill
For over 20 years, Colvin Run Mill has organized a special Father’s Day program for children and their fathers. “A day of fun on a kid’s budget,” is their motto for the event. On Sunday, June 16, from noon to 4 p.m., the park welcomed Northern Virginia Carvers to the park to teach free wood carving lessons. When the fathers come they are given a tour of the mill, and can watch the mill’s grinding process.

Douglas MacArthur Elementary School celebrated the Spring Equinox on March 20 with the school’s compass rose dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling the new addition of a painted compass rose in the school's Learning Garden.

Alexandria Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred on Thursday, Oct. 11, at approximately 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Van Dorn Street and Courtney Avenue.
Mount Vernon: Hyland Hospitalized After Meeting
Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D-Mount Vernon) was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital after experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath during the Board of Supervisors Oct. 20 meeting, Fairfax County spokesperson Tony Castrilli said.

The Department of Public Safety and Communications received several calls of “suspicious noises” around the 6000 block of River Drive in Mason Neck, early in the morning on March 20, a Fairfax County Police release said.
Freeze-o-ree Tradition Continues
Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 1849 from Springfield recently enjoyed its annual Freeze-o-ree campout at Catoctin Mountain Park, Md. With temperatures in the low 20s during the day and nighttime low of 5 degrees and a wind-chill of minus 15, fourteen stalwart Scouts - some as young as 11 years of age - and 12 adults embraced the challenge. Troop 1849 has been doing this mid-winter campout at Catoctin Mountain Park nearly every winter for over 30 years.

Alexandria resident Sandi Mara has been re-elected to the Board of Directors at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The Board of Directors is made up of 15 elected volunteers who are elected to serve two-year terms.

Burke: Making History Personal at Burke History Day 2016

The Classical Ballet Theatre in Herndon presented its Children's Series Nutcracker, a condensed version of the popular holiday classic. The ballet is based on E.T.A. Hoffman's story, "The Nutcracker and the House King." Next weekend, the Classical Ballet Theatre will perform Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at the Ernst Community Cultural Center at the NVCC Annandale Campus, located at 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale.
Man Pleads Guilty to Robbing Two Alexandria Banks
Budder Khan, a 26-year-old resident of Arlington, pleaded guilty on Oct. 20 to two counts of bank robbery.
