Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax Burke Needs Drivers and Office Workers: SCFB was the winner of 2011-2012 Best of Braddock Award for Club or Organization Making a Difference in the Braddock District due in part to the Center’s Medical Transportation and Companion Shopping programs offering free transportation to seniors in the Fairfax and Burke area who no longer drive.

Sept. 11 ceremony at the Freedom Memorial.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., the Great Falls Freedom Memorial Committee will hold its annual 9/11 Ceremony at the site of the Freedom Memorial (behind the Great Falls Library at 9830 Georgetown Pike). This ceremony especially remembers the six citizens of the Great Falls community who died when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

In hopes of encouraging people to adopt cats and kittens, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter has designated July as “Extravacatza.” Adoptive families will receive half-off adoption fees, plus free spay and neuter, on cats and kittens. Senior cat adopters will receive gift bags.

Foxcroft School senior Amy Edgemond has mastered the art of competitive running in a short time, winning races routinely since joining Foxcroft’s cross country team only a year ago. This year she may well be the best runner in the Delaney Athletic Conference.
BB&T 5K Run/Walk Is Sunday, Oct. 13
The First BB&T 5K will be held this Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Fairfax Corner shopping center. The 1K Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. The 5K course is USATF-certified.

Russian Women’s Choir Performing at CVHS
Centreville High’s Choral Department is hosting a Russian women’s choir while it visits the U.S. called Vita in Canto, the choir will perform a free, one-hour concert next Thursday, April 4, at 7 p.m., in the school theater. The choir is from the Ural University of Economics in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Deaf and hard of hearing elementary school students from Camelot Elementary School competed in a speech contest sponsored by the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna at a regular membership meeting on Jan. 18 at the Marco Polo Restaurant in Vienna.
