Commentary: McDonnell Sets a New Low
—In Virginia, Who Cares?
The daily discoveries of more unethical and corrupt behavior by Governor Bob McDonnell continue to pile up. Most recent are the two grant “loans” to Bob and wife Maureen, each for more than what the average Virginian earns in a year, a Rolex for Bob, a New York fashion shopping spree for Maureen and gifts for two daughters’ weddings. These gifts are all from a wealthy donor involved in million-dollar-litigation with Virginia who is getting first family promotion of his diet supplement business to boost stock prices. All in all, the total undisclosed cash, loans, lodging, gifts, etc. in McDonnell’s enrichment scheme is estimated at $270,000 … so far.
The Great Falls Farmers Market Moves Indoors
In January and February the market will operate Saturdays at the Historic Great Falls Grange,
We made a collective decision to run a winter Great Falls Community Farmers Market based on a survey of summer farmers market shoppers. Most wanted an all-year market and agreed to shop year-round in support of the vendors. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful holiday market in which many vendors sold out completely before the end of the market, delighting our community with their unique offerings. However, the Farmers’ Almanac predictions for a very cold winter have been proving true. The market cancelled on Dec. 14 due to predictions of a head-on snowstorm. The Jan. 4 market faced a parking lot of ice and snow. We tried to arrange a drive-thru, but people preferred to walk. This past Saturday, rains were heavy – the first (unrelenting) downpour our market ever experienced – definitely dampening the market in all respects.

Herndon Environmental Network hosts first group cleanup.
Charlotte Anderson, 12, knew there would be plenty to pick up while picking up trash along the stream in downtown Herndon, near the Fortnightly Library. But Anderson didn’t expect the first thing found to be a shopping cart, considering the site is almost a mile away from the closest grocery store.

Potomac: Beer, Wine and Sake Added to En Bistro
Restaurant receives liquor license.
Since opening this past year, En Bistro and Sushi has impressed the Potomac community with its fresh sushi and sashimi, served in a manner that resembles a piece of fine art, instead of a dinner entrée. The small restaurant, located behind the Verizon store and next to Tally Ho in the Potomac Village Shopping Center is a Japanese bistro, complete with a kimono, once owned by a Japanese movie actor. The kimono was sent to owner Billy Ye by his mother many years ago — and he has been waiting to find the just right spot for hanging it.
Letter to the Editor: Waterfront Course Correction Needed
To the Editor: What is our goal for Alexandria? To be attractive to upper-income retirees? Or make Alexandria a place where talented young people want to live and raise a family? Judging from recent waterfront discussions, it’s the former — affluent seniors. The best research available, however, says if you want to lock in future prosperity, go for young families. Don’t get me wrong. Waterfront development is coming along reasonably well, and I compliment leadership on its work. It’s just that we need a course correction to make sure we’re heading where we want to go and don’t drift into a dead-zone of older seasonal residents whose memories and priorities are elsewhere.
