Irene Byrne McAndrew (Prendergast) Collier, of Washington, D.C., died on March 11, 2013, in Richland, Wash., at the age of 73, of natural causes related to dementia and juvenile diabetes.
Girl Scout Earns the Gold Award
Girl Scouts, known for selling cookies, do more than that. The Girl Scout Award is the highest honor earned annually by fewer than 3,000 Girl Scouts in the entire U.S. who have demonstrated superior leadership, organization and a higher commitment to community service. Gold Award projects cover a range of issues from anti-bullying campaigns to tutoring to promoting healthy behaviors.
Intersection Improvements, Walkway Installed at Westmoreland Street and Haycock Road in McLean
On Nov. 5, Supervisor John Foust (D- Dranesville), Haycock Elementary School Principal, Dr. Kelly Sheers, and Fairfax County Departments of Transportation and Capital Facilities personnel met at the intersection of Westmoreland Street and Haycock Road to celebrate the completion of a pedestrian walkway, signal crossing and right turn lane recently installed by Fairfax County.
A Legacy of Local History
It is with great sadness that the Great Falls Historical Society notes the passing of its founder, Milburn P. Sanders, who died Sunday, Sept. 2. Milburn founded the Great Falls Historical Society in the fifth decade of his life. He told me that he loved to archive and record things, and recording local history was a delight for him.

Letter: Taking Exception on Medicaid Expansion
Your recent editorial ["Expanding Medicaid Good For Virginia," The Connection, January 23-29, 2013] is noble in its desire to "extend health coverage to more than 400,000 residents who currently have no health insurance." If public policy making were just that easy. The editorial then goes on to indifferently say, "the Federal government picks up the tab.
