Tsunami Earns Division Championship
Despite a persistent rainfall and a near 30-degree drop in temperature Saturday morning July 21, Riverside Gardens’ Tsunami swim team defeated the host team from High Point Pool by a score of 269-151. With the win, Riverside Gardens became NVSL Division Six champions. The Tsunamis ended the season undefeated: 5-0.
Crime
The following incidents were reported by the Arlington Police Department. MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 4200 block of N. 2nd Road. At 6:59 a.m. on May 10, a verbal argument escalated out front of an apartment building and the victim was assaulted by three subjects. The victim was stabbed in the left side of the torso during the assault. A 37-year-old Arlington man, a 43-year-old Arlington man and a 25-year-old Hyattsville, Md. man were arrested and charged with malicious wounding. They were held without bond.

So why do the 480 students who were accepted for next year’s freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology seem so important? Fairfax County Public Schools have a single elite magnet school, Thomas Jefferson, and TJ is frequently referred to as the top high school in the country. Dramatic disparity in the makeup of admissions at TJ is an indicator of disparity in early identification of students as gifted and talented, of access to advanced classes and enrichment, and in the basic education that the Fairfax County Public school system offers to all of its students.
