More than a dozen local restaurants, grocery stores and other food businesses showcased their cuisines for the community on Dec. 9 at the 2015 Taste of Braddock.

Four teenagers from the Centreville and Clifton area were charged with setting fire to vehicles, Fairfax County Police announced July 23, associated with 11 vehicle fires in the Little Rocky Run neighborhood over the last several weeks.

New and returning students at Robinson Secondary School were welcomed on the first day with a corridor of cheerleaders, blaring music and an inflated ram tunnel leading to the front doors. And the smiling face of their principal, Matthew Eline, who joined the cheerleaders and held a sign saying “May I help you?”

To bring more attention to this issue and in light of October being declared Domestic Violence Awareness month in Fairfax County, supervisor John Cook (R-Braddock) hosted his third annual Stop Domestic Violence Community Awareness Event on Oct. 15 at Chuy’s restaurant in Fairfax.
‘Drive to Donate’ Campaign Raises Funds for Fire and Rescue Departments in Fairfax
Transurban, operator of the I-95 and I-495 Express Lanes, designated March 21 for a “Drive to Donate” campaign. All tolls collected on that day from the nearly 40 miles of lanes stretching from the Dulles Toll Road to Stafford County would be donated to local Fire and Rescue departments.
Mount Vernon Church Tree Sale Breaks Sales Record
In five years of selling Christmas trees, St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria has never sold more than this year. According to Ted Boling with the church, they surpassed last year’s numbers by over 40 percent each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving. “We attribute it to great weather and a great reputation for fresh, full Fraser firs,” he said.

Volunteers Clean Up Old Colchester Road
Ten volunteers offered up their Saturday morning to clean up Old Colchester Road in Lorton. The team, which included members of the Mason Neck Lions Club and Civic Association, Del. Dave Albo (R-42) and his son, collected 14 bags of litter, a tire and other assorted trash, according to environmentalist Joe Chudzik of Mason Neck.

Mount Vernon: Expanding Fort Belvoir Elementary
When Fort Belvoir Elementary School opens in 2016, an expanded campus will provide a base institution for all school-aged children of Fort Belvoir families. The expansion includes 20 general education classrooms, bringing the population capacity to 1,594 students, according to a release from Fairfax County Public Schools.

Burke United Methodist Church Supports Dominican Republic Mission
Members of Burke United Methodist Church are finishing what they started three years ago in the Dominican Republic. A mission team from the church began working on a house for local clergyman in Sosúa, Pastor Jeremias. During construction, Jeremias died of complications from brain cancer. Funds for the house went to help with the pastor’s medical bills so the building was never completed.
