Akrawi, 18, a Lake Braddock Bruin who died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Dec. 18. They laid candles and flowers by an easel holding his senior picture.

250 Brave Cold in 23rd Burke CROP Hunger Walk
Jennifer Weiner’s wristband read 11,188 steps. That’s how many it took the Springfield resident to complete the 3.7-mile Burke CROP Hunger Walk on Nov. 22. Weiner is Rabbi Educator for Congregation Adat Reyim, which sent more than a dozen volunteers to the fundraiser for the 14th straight year.
Clifton and Chantilly: Athletic Fields Named for Local Sports Icons
Clifton resident Jeff Stein was among three local sports icons recognized Nov. 7 with athletic fields being named after them. Stein’s name now marks Soccer Field #3 at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Chantilly.

Lorton: Albo Urges for Grant Funding to Remove Abandoned Ship
The 50-foot, steel-hulled landing craft resting in shallow water about 110 feet offshore in Belmont Bay once hauled materials for construction of the nearby Fairfax Yacht Club in the 1980s. When the job was completed, the WWII-type landing craft was abandoned. Over the years, the name of the company responsible for the barge was lost.
Mount Vernon: Surovell Victorious In 36th
Del. Scott Surovell (D-44) will be switching to the Senate side of the capitol building in Richmond, after he defeated Republican challenger Jerry Foreman for the 36th District senator job. Foreman finished with 3,684 votes, over 31 percent, to Surovell’s 7,934 votes, over 68 percent.

After six months of meetings, the Ad Hoc commission created by Board of Supervisors chairman Sharon Bulova to review police practices has concluded its primary work. Chair of the commission’s Independent Oversight and Investigations subcommittee Jack Johnson presented that group’s final recommendations to the full commission on Oct. 8.

Mount Vernon: Expanding Fort Belvoir Elementary
When Fort Belvoir Elementary School opens in 2016, an expanded campus will provide a base institution for all school-aged children of Fort Belvoir families. The expansion includes 20 general education classrooms, bringing the population capacity to 1,594 students, according to a release from Fairfax County Public Schools.

Patrick Hulse, together with his brother Shane, has cracked the code: turning what he loves into a business. Patrick is a junior at the Rhode Island School of Design pursuing a degree in illustration. Shane is a freshman at New York University studying business. Last year, the South County High School graduates (Patrick 2013, Shane 2014) launched “Little Wishes,” a handcrafted greeting card company.
