Signature Theatre's ARK theater in Arlington is staging "The Gulf" by Audrey Cefaly from now through Nov. 6. The world premiere comedy is about Betty and Kendra who waste away a summer day fishing on the Alabama Delta. Suddenly, their lazy afternoon turns to chaos when the motor breaks, stranding the two, and their tumultuous relationship, in the Gulf.

Meghan Pollard, 18, of Balmoral in Clifton is taking a service gap year between graduating from Centreville High School and attending Georgia Tech. So last Fall, she set off for Tanzania in Eastern Africa, a nine-hour car ride from the government capital of Dar Es Salaam. There, she worked for six weeks at the Pomerini Secondary School, teaching English and tutoring in geography, chemistry, physics and English. She also worked in the village health clinic on AIDS projects.

The new 6,000 square foot Tysons Corner Ice Rink has officially opened for business. The opening took place on Black Friday, Nov. 28, and the season extends through March 11. The rink sponsored by CBRE Realty is situated on The Plaza next to Lord & Taylor on the second floor of the mall, and opposite the Shake Shack Restaurant. A new Hyatt Hotel is scheduled to open beside it in March.

With 23 years in education, Mark Granieri, age 43, of Ashburn was named new principal on Aug. 2 of Crossfield Elementary School on Fox Mill Road, Herndon, replacing former principal R.B. Yoshida, who moved to Virginia Beach.
