World War II veterans William McNamara and Warden Foley will be honored with the Distinguished Patriots Award at the Chamber of Commerce Salute to Veterans breakfast Nov. 12 at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.

Del Ray to host fundraiser for Cruz family.
The Del Ray Business Association will host a “Rally for Rose” fundraiser Dec. 13 for the family of Rosemarie Cruz, who died Dec. 4 from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Mount Vernon Avenue at W. Glebe Road.

George Washington Birthday parade returns after two-year absence.
Wearing t-shirts and shorts, a crowd of thousands turned out for the City of Alexandria’s George Washington Birthday Parade, which made its return after a two-year absence due to extreme weather conditions.

Ray Bell Cobean, a longtime member of the Old Dominion Boat Club and the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club, died Dec. 18, 2020, at the age of 90.

Obituary: Bob Calhoun
Former vice mayor, state senator dies at 83.
Bob Calhoun, a political statesman who represented Alexandria in elected office for 20 years, died Aug. 6 at his country wildlife preserve in Berryville, Va., following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 83 years old.

For nearly a century, The Old Town Theater served as a venue for entertainment ranging from vaudevillian stage shows to silent films, puppet shows and contemporary Hollywood blockbusters. But after the marquee dimmed and the doors were boarded up earlier this year, the Alexandria landmark is once again ready for its close up.

‘We Were Annihilated’
It was one of the best kept secrets of World War II. When 20-year-old U.S. Army Medic Robert Wineland arrived in the village of Laudersfeld, the wooded countryside of far eastern Belgium was relatively peaceful, a quiet buffer zone disrupted only by occasional artillery fire and brief skirmishes between opposing infantry patrols. But on Dec. 16, 1944, the sleepy Ardennes front was about to wake up.

McDonnell appoints Wood to Military Commission.
Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed Alexandria resident Lt. Gen. John R. (Bob) Wood (ret.) to Virginia's newly formed Commission on Military Installations and Defense Activities. “I am most concerned about preserving jobs here in Virginia,” said Wood, a graduate of T.C. Williams High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
