World War II veterans William McNamara and Warden Foley will be honored with the Distinguished Patriots Award at the Chamber of Commerce Salute to Veterans breakfast Nov. 12 at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.
Rally for Rose in Alexandria
Del Ray to host fundraiser for Cruz family.
The Del Ray Business Association will host a “Rally for Rose” fundraiser Dec. 13 for the family of Rosemarie Cruz, who died Dec. 4 from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Mount Vernon Avenue at W. Glebe Road.

George Washington Birthday parade returns after two-year absence.
Wearing t-shirts and shorts, a crowd of thousands turned out for the City of Alexandria’s George Washington Birthday Parade, which made its return after a two-year absence due to extreme weather conditions.

Obituary: Bob Calhoun
Former vice mayor, state senator dies at 83.
Bob Calhoun, a political statesman who represented Alexandria in elected office for 20 years, died Aug. 6 at his country wildlife preserve in Berryville, Va., following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 83 years old.

Caen Sister Cities committee to commemorate 72nd anniversary.
It was 80 years ago when Bill McNamara joined the National Guard in 1936. He was just 15 years old then and by the time he was 23, he was the youngest major in Europe, working for the Stars and Stripes newspaper and leading a six-man detachment across Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944.
