Life as a teenager can be fraught with anxiety. Now Fairfax's Hub Theater is bringing a premiere production inspired by "the regularly escalating violence that is being perpetrated in and on our schools" said Hub artistic director and playwright Helen Pafumi. The play is "Abominable."

Unquiet Theatre brings the edgy, bold "Some Girls" to Workhouse.
The Workhouse continues to be a "go-to" incubator venue for new theater companies in Northern Virginia. Next up is Unquiet Theater Company and its production of Neil LaBute's "Some Girls." LaBute is a film director and screenwriter as well as a playwright. The Workhouse marketing material described LaBute as "American theater's great agent provocateur" and the show is " by turns outrageously funny and deadly serious."

Women in lovely evening attire and men in snappy tuxedos were walking about the stage of the James Lee Community Center theater. It was an early dress rehearsal for the Providence Players (PPF) production of "Rumors," a farce by award winning playwright Neil Simon. The PPF cast was getting a feel for the set as final touches were being made to a tastefully decorated, contemporary two-story New York City apartment.

Neil Simon has a "trademark witty, snappy dialogue, and relatable characters that audiences enjoy ", said Joshua Redford, artistic director, Reston Community Players (RCP) . Shortly the RCP will bring Simon's "wide appeal to local audiences" with his "Chapter Two." "Chapter Two" follows the life of George Schneider, a recent widower trying to make his way in a new and rather bumpy world of dating after a long marriage. George is "still coming to terms with his wife's death, who stumbles into a new relationship. He's caught between wanting to move ahead but being unable to let go...with his trademark charm and dry, acerbic wit." said Jeff Breslow who plays George.

The well-appointed romantic honeymoon suite in a country estate outside of London is not what it seems. Panic is beginning; it is a wedding day and the bride-to-be is expected to arrive very soon. So, who is the young woman there now? And how did she get there? Is there to be a wedding at all? Such is the appetizing premise behind the area premiere of Robin Hawdon's farce of "mistaken identities, deceptions, misunderstandings and true love," said Cathy Farnsworth, McLean Community Players (MCP) producer of "Perfect Wedding."

Superman Comes to McLean
Theater Unspeakable presents ‘Superman 2050’ at Alden Theatre.
That iconic comic-book super-hero Superman is coming to the McLean Community Center. He is ready to save the day from his foe Lex Luther. Superman and the gang will be live and in person as performed by Theatre Unspeakable in the new "Superman 2050." "The moment I saw 'Superman 2050' at a conference in Philadelphia last year I knew I had to book them for the Alden. The show is just so unique," said Kathleen Herr, director of Youth Programs, Alden Theatre, McLean Community Center.

NextStop's unexpected take on Shakespeare's "Richard III."
A daring performance of Shakespeare's "Richard III" is coming to Herndon. "This is something that has never been done and an amazing opportunity to bring Shakespeare back to Herndon in a bold new way ... It will be an experience that is not to be missed,” Evan Hoffman said, artistic director of NextStop Theatre's production of "Richard III." "Our work has so often been about pushing the envelope and being just as bold with the classics as we are with newer works," Hoffman said. In this instance, he is describing a production that will feature a deaf actor in the lead role of Richard, one of the Bard's most charming bad boy villains.

Shakespeare Comes to Alden
American Shakespeare Center performs a double-bill of the Bard celebrating his 450th birthday.
In such a Shakespeare-rich area, "no one does it like the American Shakespeare Center...Shakespeare is so alive in their hands," said Sarah N. Schallern, Performing Arts Director, the Alden at the McLean Community Center. "They have quite a fan base, and to be able to host them in our beautiful, intimate Alden Theatre is a joy and an honor."
