Worker Dies on the Job A Herndon man working on a job in Chantilly died Sunday after an accident involving heavy equipment. Fairfax County police identified him as Gerardo Santiago Paulette Ruiz, 47. The tragedy occurred May 6, shortly before 3 p.m., at a business in the 4100 block of Lafayette Center Drive. Police say Ruiz was operating a forklift in the warehouse area and “apparently attempted to pass through a doorway when the forklift struck an overhead beam.” The beam then dislodged and fell on him. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The festivities are this Saturday, Oct. 20, and kick off with the Zombie Slouch 5K Run and Walk at 9 a.m., to benefit DC Candlelighters.

Rocky Run students compete Sunday in FIRST Tech Challenge finals.
On Jan. 12 at UVA, Rocky Run Middle School’s Robowiz team was a finalist in three FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) categories and triumphed in one of them. And this Sunday, March 3, the team will participate in the state finals at VCU.

Six Centreville High students — Kayla Ebright, Jared Knutti, Lily Park, Patrick McGinty, Joshua Ewalt and Hailey Knapp — have made Virginia’s All-State Choir. And they’ll perform in it, April 26, in Harrisonburg.

Woodson Fire Follow-Up
Garza, school reveal what’s next.
In the aftermath of Friday’s chemical fire at Woodson High, both Superintendent Karen Garza and Principal Scott Poole sent messages Monday to the parents. Stressing that the “safety of students and staff is always the top priority in our schools,” Garza directed the following actions be taken.

Plans underway to reduce alcohol-related crashes here.
According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, from 2006-11, Fairfax County had 1,941 alcohol-related crashes involving drivers ages 15-24. Some 54 percent happened between midnight and 3:59 a.m., and 10 percent more occurred in January than in other months.

Cabaret in Reema’s Honor The Remembrance Cabaret for Reema Samaha is this Saturday, May 26, at Westfield High. The show starts at 7 p.m., but the doors open at 6 p.m. for a bake sale and silent auction. It’s an evening of songs, dances and comedy sketches in memory of Westfield High grad and Virginia Tech victim Samaha.

Get ready — the 21st annual Centreville Day celebration is almost here. Slated for Saturday, Oct. 19, in Centreville’s Historic District, it features a parade, music, a 5K, live entertainment, crafts, children’s games and rides, food — who’s up for fried Oreos? — and fun for all ages.

Building, Road Construction Ahead
New and exciting projects are on the horizon in the Sully District. Below are some of them: COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Currently, many local residents needing radiation or other oncology treatments go to Inova Fairfax Hospital to receive them. But a new, fourth, medical office building on the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital campus would bring these services closer to home. Inova Fair Oaks plans to construct that building, plus more parking and a new entrance from Rugby Road. Hospital representatives hope to have the medical office building completed and occupied by the end of 2013.
