Charniele Herring (D-46) from Alexandria warmed up the crowd with references to her own journey being given a hard time along the way because she was a woman, and a black woman, and in the political minority. She has been the House Democratic Caucus Chair since 2015 and in December 2012, she was the first African-American woman to be elected chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia.
