Rabies vaccination effort at the original Alexandria dog pound on East Monroe Street. Poor conditions at the pound led to founding of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria in 1946 and its operation of a new shelter on S. Payne Street.

Seventy years ago this June the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria was born, and it was one of the first humane organizations in metropolitan Washington.
