Nelson Green, Sr. - Living Legend profile...At the height of the Vietnam War Nelson A. Greene, Sr., came to Alexandria nearly 57 years ago because a.friend told him "it might be a good place to open a funeral home." That advice proved correct and Greene has.been an integral part of Alexandria's community fabric ever since. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, Greene.served in World War II and the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of Major in the Artillery. Greene was a.founding member of Senior Services of Alexandria in 1968 and a Charter Member of Inova Alexandria.Hospital's 1872 Society. He served on City Council from 1976 to 1979. The first African-American appointed to.the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, he served from 1966-69..Greene was a member of the Alexandria Planning Commission from 1970-76. He has been active in a variety of local organizations including the Departmental Progressive Club, the NAACP, Elks Lodge #48, Friendship.Veterans Fire Engine Association and his church, Meade Memorial. He was a member of the African-American.group known as "The Secret Seven" which met regularly to discuss and study issues impacting the City. He is a.33rd Degree Mason and an American Legion member. Born May 20, 1914 in Danville, VA, Greene taught high.school in his hometown as well as at Parker Gray in Alexandria. Greene graduated from Shaw University,.Raleigh, NC, in 1941 and from Renuard School of Mortuary Sciences, NYC, in 1949.
