Signs are up indicating that Phase One of the $200 million transformation of Springfield Mall has begun. All of the interior stores are closed, while the anchor tenants, such as Macy’s, JC Penney and Target, remain open.

The joke among Springfield "insiders" is that if Vornado’s developers wait long enough, they won’t have to spend money demolishing Springfield Mall, because it will fall apart of its own volition.
