Comitia Americana medal, Horatio Gates at Saratoga, 1777, engraved by Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux, Paris, France, 1787. Gates was one of Washington's most controversial generals. His victory at Saratoga in October 1777 prompted some to suggest he should replace Washington as commander in chief.
