Senior Center Enriches Mount Vernon Life

Fairfax County is rich with senior living centers, according to Julie Ellis, Director of the Mount Vernon Center. The Mount Vernon Center, Hollin Hall Senior Center for Creative Retirement, just celebrated its 30th anniversary in January.

Book Collection to Support Scholarships for Women

The McLean Area American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) Annual Book Collection in preparation for its 44th annual Book Sale is Saturday, June 8 at the Sun Trust Bank, 515 Maple Ave., Vienna, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional collection dates at the Sun Trust Bank are: June 29; July 20; and, Aug. 10. All kinds of books in good condition, especially children’s books and DVDs are needed.

Fredona Gartlan Dies

A life dedicated to helping the needy.

Fredona Manderfield Gartlan, a longtime advocate for those suffering from mental illness, died April 22, 2013 at her home in Mason Neck. She was 85 and had suffered in recent years from Alzheimer’s Disease. The cause of death was an apparent heart attack.

‘Six Degrees of Separation’

Kevin Bacon is nowhere to be found. Instead, it’s Sidney Poitier that brings together friends and strangers in “Six Degrees of Separation,” now playing at Port City Playhouse. The popular “six degrees of separation” theory explores the premise that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else by a chain of no more than six acquaintances, and Port City Playhouse brings playwright John Guare’s smart dialogue to life in a thoughtfully-executed production that showcases a stellar ensemble cast.
