Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chairman Jeff McKay (D), Supervisor Dalia Palchik (D-Providence), Supervisor Jimmy Bierman (D-Dranesville), and others ceremonially broke ground on July 17 for the Somas at McLean, an affordable housing development backed by Amazon.com for people earning 30–60 percent of the area median income.

Located at 1750 Old Meadow Road, phase one costs $108 million and will offer 231 apartments, while phase two costs $107 million and has 225. Tysons-based SCG Development is developing the project.

"Investing in affordable housing is investing in our economic development and competitiveness," McKay said.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the $33.3 million property acquisition. The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority will own the land and lease it to affiliates of SCG Development. "Innovative partnership has enabled us to leverage private equity to convert an unused office building site," Supervisor Dalia Palchik (D- Providence) said in a statement.
