The girls basketball teams of George Washington Middle School and Jefferson-Houston Pre-K-8 IB School made history Dec. 3 when GWMS defeated Jefferson-Houston 22-14 in Alexandria’s inaugural Middle School Girls Basketball Championship.

Played at the Alexandria City High School gym, the game consisted of two halves. GWMS point guard Dallas Broussard, an eighth-grader, was named MVP. Jefferson-Houston was led by sixth-grader Kali Bates.

Both teams entered the game with a 5-1 record. The championship marked the end of an eight-game season for the middle school girls. With four middle schools in Alexandria, the schools play against each other twice before the playoffs.

The girls championship also marked the expansion of additional athletic programs for middle school students. Middle school boys basketball has begun with football, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading, and boys’ and girls’ tennis scheduled to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year.
