The Miracle League of Alexandria held its annual tribute to First Responders during the game held Sept. 21 at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center.
“Twenty-three years later we remember and strive to find hope, peace and goodwill even though we are haunted by the attack on the citizens of our nation,” said Miracle League president Mac Slover.
A pre-game ceremony included recognition of volunteers from the Alexandria City High School National Honor Society and the Honor Guard that represented first responders.
“Without our first responders this city does not function,” said Miracle League founder Bill Rivers. “Today we have a great opportunity to say thank you to them.”
Captain Bob Gilmore of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office was on hand for the ceremony and recalled answering the call to help at the Pentagon when he was with the Alexandria Police Department.
“I can still smell the plane burning,” Gilmore said. “It is something I will never forget and I hope others will never forget the tragedy of that day.”
The game was in tribute to the city’s police, fire and rescue and sheriff’s department personnel.
“The Miracle League of Alexandria is proud to salute our men and women first responders,” Slover said. “You are heroes every day and we look up to you.”
