There was a pit stop at Gateway Park in Arlington
The George Washington Memorial Parkway installed a new water fountain on the Mount Vernon Trail at the rest area near the Old Stone Bridge and Alexandria Avenue. The water fountain replaces the water fountain installed in 1987 by a previous incarnation of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail. The new water fountain is a frostless fountain which will be able to function year-round, and also includes a water bottle filling station. Replacement included installation of new underground plumbing as well as a new concrete pad.
The rest area was designated as the Peter B. Webster III Memorial Area by Congress in 2018. Funding for the water fountain was provided by donations made to the National Park Foundation in Webster’s memory.
In addition to the fountain replacement, the existing bench, bike rack and interpretive sign will be replaced with the assistance of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail.
