Last week we reported that the ospreys have returned to Northern Virginia from their wintering grounds and that locals have watched them refurbishing their nests with sticks.
For many years, a pair has built a nest and raised their young each spring on a platform at the Belle Haven Marina on the Potomac River. On March 26, Charlene Johnson captured these photographs of the pair mating at dawn.
Adult female ospreys tend to have brownish streaks on their breast. Females are typically larger than males.
