Two more Fairfax County Farmers Markets will open next week. The Wakefield Market in Wakefield Park will open for the season on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, and the Lorton Market at the Lorton VRE parking lot will open on Sunday, May 31, 2020.
Openings of the county’s 10 producer-only markets have been delayed this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The volunteer-run markets are opening as Virginia begins to reopen its economy and volunteers become available to serve at the markets. The Reston, McCutcheon/Mount Vernon and Burke markets opened earlier in May.
While the markets still feature the same locally grown, farm-fresh products customers have come to value, procedures at the markets are decidedly different this year in keeping with the Virginia Governor’s and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) social distancing and safety guidelines. When possible, shoppers are asked to pre-order their items directly from the vendors. At the markets, customers are asked to comply with all COVID-19 safety procedures, including limiting shoppers to two persons per household, wearing facial coverings, and maintaining 6 feet of distance from others at the markets. Pre-ordering and streamlined payment and pickup options should help shoppers keep their visits relatively brief. For more information on the new market guidelines, including a list of vendors for each market, visit https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/farmersmarkets.
This season, the Wakefield market will be open on Wednesdays at 8100 Braddock Road from 2 to 6 p.m. The Lorton market will be open on Sundays at 8990 Lorton Station Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
