Person of Interest Identified in Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Crash

A man has been identified in connection with the fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash that occurred on Feb. 29 on Old Colchester Road in Lorton. Detectives from Crash Reconstruction Unit worked extensively to identify the vehicle and person of interest due to their investigative leads and tips received from the community. The case remains an active investigation and further updates will be provided.

Detectives from Crash Reconstruction Unit asked for the public’s assistance identifying a vehicle and its driver involved in a crash that resulted in the death of 28-year-old Joseph Lanza, of Lorton. Officers responded to the report of a crash involving a pedestrian in the 10000 block of Old Colchester Road on Saturday, Feb. 29, around 4:35 p.m. Preliminarily, detectives believe Lanza approached the roadway and was hit by a dark colored sedan with a silver or gray hood, possibly a Honda Prelude, traveling westbound on Old Colchester Road. The car did not stop and was last seen traveling west on Old Colchester Road. Lanza was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Speed and alcohol are unknown factors for the driver. Detectives have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian.

This is the seventh pedestrian fatality in the county to date in 2020.
