Juno Braley - Impromptu Art
Each November, the Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL) sponsors a state convention at the Richmond Convention Center. This year, the convention was held virtually on Zoom with the aid of G Suite and other remote participation tech tools. Students from 50 schools across the state participated, including nine students from Madison. The state convention features a wide variety of competitions in academics, graphic crafts, and creative arts, all based on classical content and themes. In addition, students participate in Discamus sessions featuring Latin and Greek teachers and professors from around the state, a spirit contest between schools, a talent show, elections for state officers, and other activities.
Each Madison student took three academic tests and participated in three additional arts and crafts or creative arts contests (this year, everything but the academic tests and impromptu art contest happened prior to convention, with due dates by Nov. 7. Seniors and Co-Presidents of the Latin Club Juno Braley and Melinda Goldfedder served as Madison’s voting delegates and representatives at the Nominations Committee Meeting, and the group as a whole earned 27 individual awards and a school spirit award.
The Madison delegation included a student who attended the 2017, 2018, and 2019 VJCL conventions; two students who attended the 2018 and 2019 conventions; three students who attended the 2019 convention; three students for whom this was their first convention; and students from every level of Latin.
