Unattended Cooking Cause of West Springfield House Fire

On Monday, April 20 at 7:43 p.m., units were dispatched for a reported house fire in the 6200 block of Lavell Court in the West Springfield area of Fairfax County Units arrived on the scene of a two-story, single-family home with smoke showing from the roof. Crews quickly located a fire in the second-floor kitchen with extension into the attic. The fire was rapidly extinguished. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.

Two occupants were home at the time of the fire. One occupant noted smoke coming from the kitchen and discovered a fire. She retrieved her child and safely evacuated. She then called 9-1-1.

Fire Investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature and started on stove. The cause of the fire was unattended cooking materials.

Two occupants were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross assistance was offered but declined. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $93,750.
