Vienna Police Highlights June 7 – 13, 2019

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from June 7 – 13, 2019.

INCIDENTS

Petit Larceny -- Dollar Tree 215 Maple Avenue, West May 30, 11:30 a.m. A citizen advised she was shopping at the Dollar Tree. When she left the store, she realized she had left her purse in the cart. The woman returned to the store, and an employee advised her that a customer had turned the purse in. The citizen noticed a bottle containing her medication was missing from her purse.

Suspicious Event -- 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE Between June 1 at 12 p.m. and June 2 at 12 p.m. A resident reported damage to his vehicle that he believes was done unintentionally by neighborhood children playing.

Natural Death -- 500 Block Plum Street, SW Between June 4 at 12 p.m. and June 7 at 9:28 a.m. Officers responded to assist rescue personnel with a report of CPR in progress. A citizen visiting his grandmother found her unresponsive in her home when he arrived. It was determined that the elderly female was deceased from natural causes.

Petit Larceny -- 1100 Block Westbriar Court, NE June 6 between 11:53 a.m. and 6 p.m. A resident reported that packages delivered to her porch by Fed Ex were stolen while she was at work.

Assist EMS -- Dogwood Street, SW Between June 6 at 9 p.m. and June 7 at 1:18 p.m. A resident reported that he found his tenant injured in his bedroom and needed immediate medical attention. Officers responded with rescue personnel and transported the man to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.

Petit Larceny -- Giant Food 359 Maple Avenue, East June 7, 11:22 a.m. An employee reported that five juveniles took a case of beer and ran out of the store. The employee was able to recover the beer. However, the juveniles fled the area.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block Center Street, South June 7, 3:33 p.m. A juvenile reported that another juvenile smeared berries on his bicycle.

Petit Larceny -- Vienna Aquatic Club 625 Marshall Road, SW June 7 between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Two juveniles reported money was stolen from their backpacks while they were at the pool.

Animal Case -- 400 Block Ridge Road, SW June 7, 7:15 p.m. A resident reported that two young foxes that were tangled in nylon netting in their yard. The animals appeared to have been trapped for a couple of days, were in poor health and needed to be euthanized. The officer euthanized both animals and assisted the resident in disposing of them.

Petit Larceny -- Giant 359 Maple Avenue East, June 7 between 7:40 p.m. and 7:48 p.m. Two juveniles attempted to steal a 30 pack of beer. The loss prevention officer confronted the juveniles about the theft. The juveniles ran away from the officer leaving behind the beer.

Destruction of Property -- 1100 Block Pekay Street, SW Between June 7 at 8 p.m. and June 8 at 9 a.m. A resident reported that someone threw a rock at his house, breaking a window. It was later determined that a juvenile was responsible for the incident. The resident advised he would talk to the parents of the juvenile to settle the matter, and no further police assistance would be needed.

Assist EMS -- 400 Block Orchard Street, NW June 8, 4:38 a.m. A Lyft driver found a woman lying in the roadway suffering from a medical emergency. Rescue personnel transported the woman to an area hospital in non-life-threatening condition.

Suspicious Person -- 1200 Block Ware Street, SW June 8 between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. An employee with a building company advised that a man came to one of their houses under construction claiming to be a building official. The contractors at the house confronted the man and determined he was not there in an official capacity. Initially the man refused to leave, but eventually complied and left the area.

Assist EMS -- 200 Block Moore Avenue, SE June 8, 5:52 p.m. Officers responded with rescue personnel to a possible overdose. It was determined that the resident had a reaction after smoking marijuana. The resident was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Unlawful Entry -- 400 Block East Street, NE June 8, 11:54 p.m. A resident reported that he heard someone tampering with the rear sliding door of their home. When he opened the curtains of the door, he observed an unknown man run off and flee the area in a vehicle.

Suspicious Person -- 100 Block Church Street, SW June 8 between 2p.m. and 3 p.m. A resident contacted police to report her neighbor’s increasingly bizarre behavior.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- 600 Block Niblick Drive, SE June 9, 3:30 p.m. A man was campaigning in town for a local politician. When he went to one of the homes, the homeowner’s dog rushed past its owner and bit the man on his leg. ACO Barker will follow up with the dog’s owner on the quarantine requirements.

Animal Case -- 900 Block Park Street, SE June 9, 8:48 p.m. Officers responded to assist in removing raccoons from inside a home.

Domestic Dispute -- Owaissa Road, SE June 10, 2:20 p.m. Officers responded for a verbal dispute between a resident and his adult daughter.

Grand Larceny -- Giant Food 359 Maple Avenue, East June 10 between 6:15 p.m. and 6:56 p.m. A customer reported her wallet was stolen from her purse while she was in the store.

Business Alarm -- Advanced Pediatrics 100 East Street, SE June 11, 11:32 p.m. Officers responded to an alarm. While searching the business they located a person. The person was properly identified and allowed to leave the area. Nothing appeared to have been disturbed inside the business.

Open Door/Window -- Calypso Salon 424 Maple Avenue, East June 12, 12:37 a.m. While on a routine business check, an officer found an open door. Officers checked inside the business and made sure everything was ok.

Assist EMS -- 7-11 427 Maple Avenue East June 12, 4:30 p.m. Officers responded to assist with a medical call. Medics rendered medical care to the person and determined that no further aid was needed.

Found Property -- Malcolm Road, SW / Nutley Street NW June 12, 10:47 p.m. While on routine patrol, an officer found a vehicle license plate laying on the roadway.

Assist EMS -- 500 Block John Marshall Drive, NE June 13, 1 a.m. Officers were requested to assist medics with an intoxicated person. The medics transported the person to the hospital in a non life-threatening condition.

CRASHES

521 Maple Avenue, East -- May 30, 12:45 p.m. Vehicle-2 was stopped in traffic at a red traffic light, eastbound on Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1, a gray BMW, struck the rear of Vehicle-2 causing damage to both vehicles, then fled the area. Driver-2 was transported by rescue personnel to an area hospital with non-life-threating injuries. Driver-1 was not located.

Tapawingo Road near Cottage Street, SW -- June 5, 7:14 a.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling eastbound on Tapawingo Road, SW. After crossing over Cottage Street, Vehicle-1 ran off the roadway, struck a Town of Vienna street sign and drove through a yard. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Reckless Driving.

Maple Avenue near Park Street, NE -- June 5, 9:57 p.m. Vehicle-1 was attempting to turn left out of the parking lot at 225 Maple Avenue, East to go westbound on Maple Avenue. Vehicle-2 was traveling westbound on Maple in the left lane and struck the side rear corner of Vehicle-1.

Maple Avenue East / Glyndon Street, SE -- June 6, 10:10 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling at a slow speed in traffic on Maple Avenue East. Vehicle-1 was distracted by his radio and rear-ended Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Fail to Pay Full Time and Attention.

900 Block Ware Street, SW -- June 8, 5:49 p.m. Vehicle-2 was legally parked on Ware Street. Vehicle-1 made a wide turn from Tapawingo Road onto southbound Ware Street and drifted head-on into Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued two summonses charging No Driver’s License and Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Park Street near Adahi Road, SE -- June 10, 3:25 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Park Street, stopped with traffic prior to the intersection with Adahi Road. Vehicle-1 was traveling in the same direction and struck the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Following Too Close.

100 Block Maple Avenue, East -- June 11, 2:20 p.m. Vehicle-2 was stopped in the center turn lane for Eastbound Maple Ave East waiting to turn into 132 Maple Avenue East. Vehicle-1 was traveling in the left through lane for Eastbound Maple Avenue East and was distracted by his water bottle causing him to collide with Vehicle-2 causing property damage. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Fail to Pay Full Time and Attention

Beulah Road, NE / Creek Crossing Road NE -- June 11, 6:29 p.m. Vehicle-1 was in the Southbound Lane of Beulah Road NE making a left turn onto Creek Crossing Road NE. Vehicle-2 was turning south on Beulah Road NE from the Westbound lane of Creek Crossing Road NE and struck Vehicle-1 in the rear driver side corner. Vehicle-2 left the scene without stopping or providing information. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Fail to Pay Full Time and Attention

Park Street, SE / Maple Avenue East -- June 12, 10:35 a.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling Eastbound on Maple Avenue East at the intersection of Maple Avenue East and Park Street SE when it collided with Vehicle-2. Vehicle-2 was attempting to make a left turn onto Park Street SE from Maple Avenue East. Witness-1 was one car behind Vehicle-1 and in the left lane and stated Vehicle-1 had a red light but continued straight. Driver-2 stated she had a green turn arrow. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Disregarding Red Light The passenger of Vehicle-1 was transported to Fairfax Hospital in non life-threatening condition.
