RSVP-Northern Virginia and the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics will hold a joint volunteer info session, Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m., at the Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton.
RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), volunteer network for people 55-years-old-and-better, is the official volunteer partner of the NVSO, the largest annual senior competition in Northern Virginia. The 90-minute event is free and open to the public.
Volunteers are sought to support the 2019 NVSO games in a variety of critical as well as creative roles ranging from running the nonprofit’s website to designing its tee shirts and posters. This free session will be held in the Oak Room at Oak Marr RECenter, located at 3200 Jermantown Road, Oakton. Oak Marr is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority. Representatives from RSVP, NVSO and Oak Marr will speak about their various opportunities.
RSVP provides personalized support to seniors who are seeking their ideal service opportunities in and around Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria.
The NVSO, held each September since 1982, includes participants and volunteers from Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun and Fauquier counties and from the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. The 2018 games attracted nearly 900 competitors.
In conjunction with this special event, Oak Marr RECenter is hosting a photo exhibit thru Feb 1, showcasing the work taken by the RSVP Volunteer Photo Corp during the 2018 games. This group, consisting of more than a dozen photographers from the photo club at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University, covered dozens of NVSO events.
In addition to the NVSO, RSVP offers more than 200 other meaningful volunteer opportunities that include helping seniors age in place, assisting local food pantries, and teaching financial literacy. RSVP volunteers also support the work of the Fairfax County Park Authority.
RSVP volunteers enjoy flexible schedules, free accident and liability insurance while serving, optional mileage and meal reimbursement and are invited to volunteer group service projects and social gatherings.
