Vienna Police Highlights Feb. 1 – 7, 2019

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from Feb. 1 – 7, 2019.

INCIDENTS

Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated -- Maple Avenue and Westbriar Drive, NE, Jan. 27 2:54 a.m.

Sergeant Ruddy observed a driver pull over and stop in a “No Parking” zone in the 100 block of Locust Street, SW. The officer stopped to check the welfare of the driver. Upon her interaction with the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol. The man advised he was lost and trying to get home. The officer suggested the man call a cab or an Uber to ensure he got home safely. An Uber arrived to transport the man home. A short time later the officer observed the man come back to his vehicle and drive off. After observing the driver commit a traffic offense, the officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver failed to complete a series of field sobriety tests successfully and was placed under arrest. He was transported to the Vienna Police Station where he was able to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. Sergeant Ruddy then transported the 52-year-old man from Brookview Drive in Bethesda, Md. to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

Suspicious Person -- 1200 Block Ware Street, SW, Jan. 29 between 3:30 a.m. and 5:40 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man standing on the sidewalk. The man stated he left his home in Fairfax County after having a dispute with his wife. He came to a relative’s house in Vienna to prevent another altercation with his wife. However, his relative refused to permit him in his house. The officers notified Fairfax County Police to check on the welfare of the wife.

The -- 100 Block Maple Avenue, East, Jan.29 between 10. and 11 a.m. A resident was working as a vendor in the area when an unknown person took his empty manila folder.

Robbery -- Sally Beauty Supply, 327 Maple Avenue, East, Jan. 30, 8:25 p.m. An employee reported that a man entered the store and approached the counter to purchase a hair trimmer. The man then shoved the employee, grabbed the trimmer, and fled the store.

Domestic Dispute -- Hillcrest Drive, SW, Jan. 30, 8:35 p.m. Officers responded to a dispute between a woman and her adult son. The son left the residence before the arrival of the officers.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block Heritage Lane, NW, Jan. 31, 3:32 p.m. A juvenile arrived home from school and found the front door of the residence open. Officers searched the residence, finding no one inside. The homeowner checked the home and confirmed that nothing appeared to have been disturbed.

Assault -- Glyndon Street and Maple Avenue, NE, Jan. 31, 5:40 p.m. Two drivers came to the Vienna Police Station to report a road rage incident between them. The drivers were both attempting to turn onto westbound Maple Avenue from opposite sides of Glyndon Street. The two drivers began yelling at each other. One driver threw a beverage can at the other vehicle, causing the drink to splatter in the vehicle. The driver of that vehicle did not wish to pursue charges for the assault.

Narcotics Violation -- 600 Block Gibson Drive, SW, Feb. 1, 12:11 a.m. Officers responded to a residence for a report of a noise complaint and someone shooting a BB gun in the backyard. Officers heard very loud music coming from inside the home, and upon the officers’ interaction with one of the occupants, a strong odor of marijuana was detected. The man ran from the officer into another room in the house. A search warrant was obtained and served on the home. The investigation in this case is still ongoing.

Juvenile Case -- Walgreens, 225 Maple Avenue, East, Feb. 1, 1:41 p.m. An employee reported continuous issues with juveniles acting disorderly in the store after school.

Fraud -- 100 Block Mendon Lane, SW, Feb. 2, 3:36 p.m. A resident purchased tickets from a man through Craigslist. When the resident tried to use the tickets at the Capital One Arena, he was advised by the employees that the tickets were fake.

Alcohol Violation -- 100 Block Elm Street, SW, Feb. 2, 11:36 p.m. Officers responded to the report of a party with underage drinking. The homeowner advised his juvenile daughter invited several of her friends over for a party after the school dance. The party was disbanding as the officers arrived, with parents picking up their children. The homeowner was unaware that the juveniles had alcohol at the party.

Arrest – Sex Offense -- Wolftrap Hotel, 430 Maple Avenue, West, Between Feb. 2 at 10 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 12:27 a.m. Officers responded to a room at the hotel for a report of a sexual assault. The officers found the room in disarray with furniture overturned and damage throughout the room. A woman advised the officers that an acquaintance picked her and her sister up from their home and transported them to the hotel where they used drugs, and she fell asleep. She woke up to find her sister had left the room and the acquaintance was angry, stating his money was missing. The acquaintance began destroying property throughout the room, assaulted the woman and prevented her from leaving. The assault was interrupted when an unknown person came to the room to investigate the noise. MPO Shaw arrested the 29-year-old man from Guinea Road in Annandale. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Sexual Assault, Abduction, Simple Assault and Possession of Marijuana.

Assist EMS -- 1000 Block Lynn Street, SW, Feb. 3 between 3 and 4:17 a.m. A man was at the home of an acquaintance where the two men had been consuming alcohol. The man fell and injured his head. Rescue personnel responded, however, the man refused treatment. The man’s wife responded to the scene to transport him home.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle -- 100 Block Saint Andrews Drive, NE, Between Jan. 31 at 2:06 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 1:08 p.m. A resident reported an abandoned vehicle parked in the area. The officer found the vehicle to have been reported stolen in Fairfax County. The Fairfax County Police Department was notified of the recovery of the vehicle.

Found Property -- Exxon, 395 Maple Avenue, East, Feb. 3, 3:49 p.m. A citizen found a license plate in the parking area of the gas station.

Found Property -- 300 Block Glyndon Street, SE, Feb. 3, 4:51 p.m. A citizen reported a bicycle that was left abandoned in the area.

Arrest – Weapons Violation -- 100 Block Pleasant Street, NW, Feb. 3 6:12 p.m. Officers responded to a report of two males trespassing in the area. When a resident requested they leave the area, they began yelling and cursing at him. One of the males was a juvenile; the other was an adult. The adult was found to be in possession of metal knuckles. MPO Smith issued a summons to the 18-year-old man from Lewis Street, NW in Vienna charging Possession of a Concealed Weapon. The man was released on his signature. Both males were advised that they were trespassed from the property.

Arrest – Drunk in Public -- 100 Block Maple Avenue, West, Feb. 3, 7:19 p.m. An officer observed a man walking eastbound along Maple Avenue. The man was stumbling and almost falling into traffic on Maple Avenue. Upon the officer’s interaction with the man, he detected signs of impairment. MPO Smith arrested the 57-year-old man from Sleepy Hollow Road in Falls Church. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk in Public.

Suspicious Person -- 100 Block Sharon Lane, NW, Feb. 3 10:04 p.m. A resident reported a woman was on his property refusing to leave. The woman advised she was looking for an old friend’s house and was knocking on every door to determine which house it was. The woman was trespassed from the property and was advised that she may be charged if she returns.

Domestic Dispute -- Gibson Circle, SW, Feb. 3 11:30 p.m. A resident reported a dispute she had with her juvenile daughter.

Arrest – Domestic Assault -- Gibson Circle, SW, Feb. 4 5:57 p.m. Officers responded for a domestic dispute between the resident and her juvenile daughter. During the dispute, the juvenile assaulted her mother. PFC Williams placed the 15-year-old juvenile under arrest. She was transported to the Fairfax County Juvenile Intake where a petition was issued charging Domestic Assault.

Suspicious Person -- Frederick Street and Ridge Road, SW. Feb. 5 3:40 a.m. A resident reported a car alarm sounding and observing four people running away from the area of Thelma Circle, SW. Officers located two males, a juvenile and an adult, in the area of Frederick and Ridge, SW. The two males were found to have various items that did not appear to belong to them. The adult was also in possession of marijuana. The officers checked the area for any vehicles that appeared to have been tampered with negative results. Officers did locate some personal items that appeared to have been discarded near a sewer. The adult was transported to the Vienna Metro Station for transportation home. The juvenile was transported to the Vienna Police Station for his guardian to pick him up. A few hours later two residents reported larcenies from their vehicles.

Arrest – Narcotics Violation -- Frederick Street and Ridge Road, SW, Feb. 5 3:40 a.m. Sergeant Ruddy was investigating a Suspicious Person complaint when she found one of the men was in possession of marijuana. The officer issued a summons to the 24-year-old man from 3rd Place, NW in Washington, DC charging Possession of Marijuana. The man was released on his signature.

Petit Larceny -- 1000 Block Tapawingo Road, SW, Between Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 5 at 7:40 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered her vehicle and took several items including clothing, a phone charger, US currency, and a handbag. Officers investigating a Suspicious Person complaint recovered some of the property and returned it to the resident. The investigation in this case is still ongoing.

Grand Larceny -- 1000 Block Moorefield Creed Road, SW, Between Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 5 at 8:45 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered her vehicle and stole her phone charger and prescription sunglasses. Officers investigating a Suspicious Person complaint recovered the charger and returned it to the resident. The investigation on this case is still ongoing.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block Maple Avenue, West, Feb. 5 between 2 and 4 p.m. A citizen reported having a suspicious encounter with his estranged wife.

Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Orleans Circle, SW, Feb. 5, 5:43 p.m. Officers responded to check the welfare of a resident after a family member received a concerning text. The resident was transported to an area facility for evaluation.

CRASHES

120 Maple Avenue, East -- Dec. 22, 11 p.m. A citizen reported that their vehicle was struck while it was legally parked in the parking lot. The other driver did not leave their information.

Dominion Road and Ayr Hill Avenue, NE -- Jan. 15 6:55 p.m. Vehicle-2 was legally parked on Dominion Road. Driver-1 was backing up from his parking space and struck Vehicle-2, Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Nutley Street and Mendon Lane, SW -- Jan. 28, 6:51 p.m. Vehicle-2 was stopped in traffic for a red signal in the northbound lanes of Nutley Street before Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 struck the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Maple Avenue near Nutley Street, NW -- Feb. 1 9:09 a.m. Two vehicles were traveling westbound on Maple Avenue in the same lane. Driver-2 stopped in traffic. Driver-1 was unable to stop in time, due to the snow-covered road, and ran into the rear of Vehicle-2.

Lawyers Road and Ayr Hill Avenue, NW -- Feb. 2, 10:38 a.m. Traffic was blocked in both directions of Lawyers Road, NW to permit workers to remove a tree. Vehicle- 2 was stopped in the northbound lane when they were struck from behind by Vehicle-1.

300 Block Adahi Road, SE 1-- Feb. 2, 12 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling westbound on Adahi Road, SE. Vehicle-1 was backing out of a driveway and struck Vehicle-2.

200 Lawyers Road, NW -- Feb. 2, 11:55 a.m. Vehicle-2 was legally parked in the parking lot of the Vienna Post Office when an unknown driver in a silver Toyota FJ Cruiser struck the vehicle and left the scene without providing their information.
