Vienna Police Highlights Sept. 28 – Oct. 4, 2018

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from Sept. 28 – Oct. 4, 2018.

INCIDENTS

Fraud -- 900 Block Glyndon Street, SE Aug. 30, 11:04 a.m. A resident reported unauthorized charges to her debit card.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block Stephen Circle, SW Between Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 1:18 p.m. A resident was concerned that they had not heard from their roommate for several days.

Suspicious Event -- 400 Block Glyndon Street, NE Between Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 2:53 p.m. A resident contacted the customer support center for Verizon for assistance from a technician in regards to service issues he was experiencing. The person he spoke to requested permission to remotely access his computer and advised him the issues were due to viruses on his computer. The person then advised the resident he owed money for the computer work, and it would have to pay by personal check. The resident immediately disconnected the call. He has since been receiving harassing phone calls regarding the payment. A Verizon technician did respond the following day and fixed the issues he was having with their service.

Assault -- 100 Block Park Street, NE Sept. 24, 9 a.m. On Sept. 27 a citizen reported an incident that had occurred a few days before. The citizen advised she was walking to her vehicle in a parking lot when a man (described as being a short, black man, approximately 28 years old) approached her and engaged her in conversation. The citizen stated she became uncomfortable with the conversation, then the man grabbed her and kissed her on the cheek. The woman was able to run back into an office and get some other people to escort her safely to her vehicle.

Malicious Wounding -- 200 Block Cedar Lane SE Sept. 25, 8:51 p.m. Officers responded to the report of an assault and located a man with a laceration to his hand. Witnesses advised the man was trying to break up a fight when one of the individuals pulled a knife, cut the man, then ran off. The officers were able to obtain very little information on the people involved in the fight. Rescue responded and treated the injured man who refused transport or further medical attention.

Police Service -- Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW Sept. 26, 12 p.m. The staff advised of an incident they had with a student earlier in the week. The student’s parents were involved in handling the incident.

Missing Person – Adult -- 100 Block Yeonas Drive, SW Between Sept. 26 at 12:23 p.m. and Oct. 1 at 1:32 p.m. On Sept. 28 a resident reported concern for their adult son who had left home earlier in the week and they had not had any contact with him since. They decided not to report him as missing as it appeared he had left on his own will. A few days later the residents received some concerning texts from their son that they felt were suspicious, and a missing person report was filed. Officers located the son, who was staying with a friend in Tennessee. A welfare check was conducted by the local Tennessee police department, and they confirmed that the son was not in any danger.

Destruction of Property -- 600 Block John Marshall Drive, NW Between Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. and Sept. 27 at 7 a.m. A builder at a construction site reported that someone damaged a protective water barrier, damaged a tarp that holds hay to prevent water runoff and removed all of the hay.

Assault -- 2T Restaurant 262 Cedar Lane, SE Sept. 28, 4:26 p.m. One of the owners of the restaurant reported an argument he had with an employee. The argument escalated when the owner began filming their exchange, and the employee knocked the phone from the owner’s hand. The warrant process was explained should the owner wish to pursue charges.

Assist EMS -- 900 Block Potterton Circle, SW Sept. 28, 6:16 p.m. A resident advised she dropped off her teenage son at a friend’s house. When her son returned home, he was sick and advised he believed he was having a reaction after using a narcotic. Rescue personnel was summoned and transported the juvenile to an area hospital for treatment.

Vehicle Tampering -- 900 Block Ware Street, SW Between Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 12 p.m. A resident reported that someone entered his vehicle and rummaged through it. Nothing of value appeared to have been taken.

Vehicle Tampering -- 600 Block Gibson Circle, SW Between Sept. 28 at 9 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 7 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. Nothing of value appeared to have been taken.

Vehicle Tampering -- 900 Block Ware Street, SW Between Sept. 28 at 9 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. Nothing of value appeared to have been taken.

Animal Case -- 500 Block Orchard Street, NW Sept. 29, 9:22 a.m. A resident found a dog running at large. MPO Lose transported the dog to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter after the dog refused to provide any identification or a valid dog license.

Police Service -- 600 Block John Marshall Drive, NW Sept. 29, 1:20 p.m. Officers responded for a residential alarm. A juvenile resident was located at the home and was concerned because they did not know what triggered the alarm.

Fount Property -- 500 Block Gibson Circle, SW Sept. 29, 5:40 p.m. A resident found a diaper bag in his front yard.

Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Fairway Drive, NE Sept. 29, 7:35 p.m. A resident reported that he and his teenage son had an argument. As the argument escalated, the son made some concerning statements, then left home. Officers searched the area and located the son a couple of hours later. PFC Rohr transported the juvenile to a local health facility for evaluation.

Arrest – Domestic Assault -- Gibson Circle, SW Sept. 29, 9:58 p.m. Officers responded to a domestic altercation between a mother and her teenage daughter. The mother advised her daughter had taken and damaged her phone. When she confronted her daughter about it, the juvenile assaulted her. Ofc. Colligan arrested the juvenile. She was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center where she was charged with Domestic Assault and Destruction of Property.

Grand Larceny -- 100 Block Kingsley Road, SE Sept. 30 between 4:30 and 6:40 p.m. A resident reported that someone, possibly his ex-girlfriend, entered the apartment he rents, damaged some of his property and took some of his belongings.

Juvenile Case -- Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW Oct. 1, 1:36 p.m. School officials requested assistance with five juveniles who left the school grounds without permission. The juveniles were located and returned to the school.

Assault --Ledo’s Pizza 141 Park Street, SE Oct. 1, 7:12 p.m. An employee reported that he was assaulted by another employee in the restaurant. The other employee advised the combat was mutual and began after the first employee began making derogatory statements to him. The officers did not observe any injuries to either employee. Both parties were advised of the warrant process should they wish to pursue charges.

Assist EMS -- 100 Block Carter Court, SW Oct. 2, 12:18 a.m. Officers responded to assist rescue with a woman who was suffering a medical emergency. The woman was transported by rescue personnel to an area hospital for further treatment.

Domestic Dispute -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West Oct. 2, 4:58 a.m. Officers responded for a verbal dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Both parties agreed to stop arguing and that no further assistance was needed.

Missing Person – Adult -- 600 Block Upham Place, NW Oct. 2, 7:52 a.m. A resident reported their adult daughter had left home during the night and they were concerned for her welfare. After checking various records, the resident found their daughter had purchased a plane ticket to California. Our officers sent a request for a welfare check to the local police jurisdiction in California to verify the daughter’s well-being when she arrived at the airport. The daughter was located by the police in California, and it was determined that she was not in need of any assistance.

Vehicle Tampering -- 1400 Block Cottage Street, SW Between Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 7:30 a.m. A resident reported that an unknown person entered his vehicle and rummaged through it.

Vehicle Tampering -- 300 Block George Street, SW Between Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. and Oct.3 at 7 a.m. A resident reported that an unknown person entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it.

Petit Larceny -- 300 Patrick Street, SW Between Oct. 2 at 9:33 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 4 a.m. A resident reported that an unknown person entered their unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. The person took a gym bag containing clothing, Bluetooth earbuds, and an iPod. The clothing was recovered down the block. The earbuds and iPod are still missing.

Petit Larceny -- 1400 Block Cottage Street, SW Between Oct. 2 at 10 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 7:45 a.m. A resident reported that an unknown person entered their unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. A wallet was missing from the vehicle.

Civil Matter -- 300 Maple Avenue, East Oct. 3, 12 p.m. A citizen advised she was sitting in her vehicle when a shopping cart rolled into it causing minor damage.

Juvenile Case -- Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW Oct. 3, 12:23 p.m. School administrators reported that a student was showing other students an explicit photo of another student on his iPad.

Arrest – Narcotic Violation -- East Street and Creek Crossing Road, NE Oct. 3, 3:46 p.m. Sgt. Sheeran observed a traffic violation and initiated a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver, he detected the odor of marijuana. The driver was found to be in possession of a measurable amount of marijuana. Sgt. Sheeran issued a summons to the 31-year-old man from East Street, NE in Vienna charging Possession of Marijuana. The man was released on his signature.

Animal Case -- 100 Block Lewis Street, NW Oct. 3, 4:30 p.m. A resident advised his dog bit their neighbor’s daughter, causing minor injury, but not breaking the skin. The resident requested the dog serve the 10-day quarantine at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, as it is difficult for them to keep her quarantined in the home. The dog was transported to the shelter by the resident.

Petit Larceny -- Vienna Community Center 120 Cherry Street, SE Oct. 3 between 5 and 5:30 p.m. A juvenile reported he left his bicycle, unlocked, outside of the Community Center when it was taken by an unknown person.

Police Service -- 400 Block Colin Lane, NW Oct. 4, 8:16 p.m. A resident advised that her brother was on the property after previously being trespassed. The man stated that he was there to retrieve some of his belongings. The resident allowed the man to retrieve the property with the presence of an officer. The man then left the property without incident.

CRASHES

Lawyers Road and Church Street, NW -- Sept. 26, 4:05 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Lawyers Road. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Church Street. After stopping at the stop sign, Vehicle-1 proceeded to pull onto Lawyers Road and was struck by Vehicle-2 Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Park Street and Cherry Street, SE -- Sept. 26, 6:37 p.m. Vehicle-1 was stopped at the stop sign on Cherry Street to turn left onto Park Street. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Park Street signaling to turn right onto Cherry Street. Driver-2 observed a street sign he believed indicated Cherry Street was closed, turned off his signal and was continuing straight on Park Street. Driver-1 observed Driver-2 signaling to turn onto Cherry, and she proceeded onto Park where the two vehicles collided. Vehicle-2 caught fire after the collision. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

300 Block East Street, NE -- Sept. 29 between 12:01 a.m. and 9 a.m. A resident left their vehicle legally parked. When they returned to the vehicle, they found it had been struck by an unknown driver.

Maple Avenue and Glyndon Street, SE -- Sept. 29, 4:38 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue in the right lane. Driver-2 slowed in heavy traffic. Driver-1 was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of Vehicle-2, causing minor damage to both vehicles.

100 Block Center Street, North -- Oct. 1, 8:40 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Center Street approaching Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 was exiting the parking lot of 105 Center Street, North to turn right onto Center. As Vehicle-1 entered the roadway, he struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield When Exiting a Private Parking Lot.

Lawyers Road and Upham Place, NW -- Oct.1, 3:44 p.m. Vehicle-2 was stopped at the stop sign, southbound, on Lawyers Road at Upham Place. Vehicle 1 was traveling behind Vehicle-2. Vehicle-1 struck the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Cottage Street near Walker Street, SW -- Oct. 1, 7:50 p.m. Vehicle-2 was legally parked in the southbound lane of Cottage Street. Vehicle-1 was traveling southbound on Cottage Street when the driver drifted to the right and struck Vehicle-2 Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.
