The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from June 15–21, 2018.
INCIDENTS
Harassing Telephone Calls -- 100 Block Elmar Drive, SE Between May 14 at 12 p.m. and June 14 at 3 p.m. A resident has been receiving harassing and profane telephone calls from his estranged wife. Officers advised the resident of the warrant process should he decide to pursue charges.
Stolen Vehicle -- 600 Block Frederick Street, SW Between June 12 at 5 p.m. and June 13 at 11 a.m. A resident reported his vehicle was stolen from his carport.
Counterfeiting -- Whole Foods 143 Maple Avenue, East June 13, 11:36 a.m. An employee advised someone passed a counterfeit bill at the store.
Grand Larceny -- Vienna Elementary School 128 Center Street, SW Between June 13 at 3 p.m. and June 14 at 9 a.m. A resident advised his child’s bicycle was left unlocked on the school’s bike rack overnight. When they returned the next morning, the bike had been taken.
Assist EMS -- 500 Block Valley Drive, SE June 13, 8:59 p.m. A man requested a welfare check on his wife. He advised he was talking to her on the phone when he heard a noise, then lost the telephone connection. Officers responded to the residence with rescue personnel and located the woman on the floor. Rescue personnel assessed the woman and determined she did not need further medical treatment. A neighbor stayed with the resident until the husband returned home.
Natural Death -- 500 Block Devonshire Drive, NE June 14 between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Officers and rescue personnel responded to assist with a resident who was unresponsive. They found an elderly man, who suffered from known medical issues, was deceased.
Animal Case – Quarantine -- 800 Block Shady Drive, SE June 14, 2:30 p.m. A man was jogging on the roadway when a dog came from its yard and bit him on the leg. The owner of the dog was located and advised of the 10-day quarantine procedure.
Natural Death -- 300 Block Valeview Court, NW June 14, 8:45 p.m. Officers responded with rescue personnel for the report of an elderly woman who was found deceased in her home. The woman suffered from known medical issues and had been under hospice care.
Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle -- 1000 Block Cottage Street, SW June 14, 10:37 p.m. A resident reported that his adult son became upset with him and took his vehicle without permission. Sgt. Tracy spoke to the son who agreed to return the vehicle and leave the residence for the night.
Found Property -- 600 Block Meadow Lane, SW June 15, 1:35 p.m. A resident found a child’s bicycle in her front yard.
Grand Larceny -- Clarity Restaurant 427 Maple Avenue, East Between June 15 at 8 p.m. and June 18 at 11 a.m. A citizen reported his moped missing from the parking lot.
Suspicious Event -- 300 Block Mill Street, NE June 1,6 2:42 a.m. A citizen reported that her vehicle was struck in the parking lot by a female driving a silver coupe. The occupants of the coupe got out to exchange information, but immediately left the area when the citizen called the police to report the accident. Ofc. Williams was later able to contact the passenger in the striking vehicle. The passenger stated they left the scene of the accident after the citizen stated there was little damage and told them not to worry about it. Ofc. Williams assisted with the exchange of driver information.
Suspicious Event -- Vienna Arsenal 386 Maple Avenue, East, #200 June 16, 3:32 p.m. An employee advised a woman entered the store with three men and stated she was interested in buying a gun. The employee requested to see identification and advised the woman of the store’s policy regarding the type of identification needed to purchase firearms. The individuals became irate and quickly left the store. As they drove out of the lot the employee noted their silver Nissan Altima had a Maryland license plate on the front and a Virginia license plate on the rear.
Vandalism -- 300 Block Lewis Street, NW Between June 16 at 9 p.m. and June 17 at 9:13 a.m. A resident reported that a hubcap on her vehicle had been vandalized.
Vandalism -- 300 Block Lewis Street, NW Between June 16 at 9 p.m. and June 17 at 10:03 a.m. A citizen reported vandalism to their driveway apron.
Arrest – Narcotics Violation -- Maple Avenue and Glyndon Street, SE June 17, 12:44 a.m. Ofc. Williams observed a vehicle with defective equipment and initiated a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver, Ofc. Williams detected the odor of marijuana. A measurable amount of marijuana and some unknown capsules were located in the vehicle. Ofic. Williams issued a summons to the 42-year-old man from Nicol Court in Bowie, Md, charging Possession of Marijuana. He was released on his signature. The capsules were sent to the lab for testing.
Narcotics Violation -- 400 Block Maple Avenue, East June 17, 9:17 a.m. Sgt. Kiley observed a vehicle commit a traffic offense and initiated a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver, Sgt. Kiley detected the odor of marijuana. The officer located two grinders in the vehicle with an unmeasurable amount of marijuana inside. The grinders were seized for destruction. The driver was driving with an expired license from another country. Her vehicle was left legally parked in the parking lot and her friends responded to pick her up. She was issued a summons for Driving Without a License and released on her signature.
Suspicious Event -- 1100 Block Maple Avenue, East June 17, 7:35 p.m. A resident advised she was walking her dog when she observed a man in a dark green Toyota driving in the area. She stated the man appeared to be masturbating while he was driving. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.
Burglary -- 300 Block Windover Avenue, NW June 18 between 3 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. A resident reported an unknown person entered his occupied home and took a computer. The basement door had been left unlocked. Nothing else appeared to have been taken.
Animal Case – Quarantine -- The Hope Center 140 Park Street, South June 19, 9 a.m. An employee was bitten on the hand by a cat during a routine procedure. Due to its health issues the cat was euthanized. ACO Barker transported the cat to the Fairfax County Health Department for testing.
Police Service -- Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South June 19, 3:41 p.m. A citizen came to the police station to turn in ammunition for destruction.
Found Property -- W&OD Bike Trail near Branch Road and Valley Drive, SE June 21, 2:48 a.m. Sgt. Sheeran was patrolling the bike trail when he observed someone with flashlights near one of the park benches. As he approached he observed an individual move toward Branch Road and another individual go into the bushes. Sgt. Sheeran located two bicycles, a skateboard, a package containing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The property was collected and brought back to the Vienna Police Department. The bikes and skateboard will be released if the owner can be identified. The marijuana and paraphernalia were turned over to the property officer for destruction.
CRASHES
Ware Street and Yeonas Drive, SW -- June 5, 10:57 p.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling southbound on Ware Street, approaching the intersection of Yeonas Drive Vehicle-1 struck the rear of Vehicle-2 which was legally parked on the road. Minor damage was caused to both vehicles.
100 Block Battle Street, SW -- Between June 11 at 9 p.m. and June 11 at 7 a.m. A vehicle was left legally parked on the roadway. When the owner returned to their vehicle they found that it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.
Nutley Street and Courthouse Road, SW -- June 1,4 10:39 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling southbound in the left lane on Nutley Street, approaching Courthouse Road, SW. Driver-2 stopped for the red traffic light. Driver-1 did not notice the light had changed causing Vehicle-1 to strike the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.
Nutley Street and Courthouse Road, SW -- June 15, 3:30 p.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling southbound on Nutley Street approaching the intersection of Courthouse Road. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Courthouse Road with the green traffic light and proceeded into the intersection of Nutley Street. As Vehicle-2 entered the intersection he was struck by Vehicle-1. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.
500 Block Maple Avenue, East -- June 15, 7:30 p.m. Vehicle-1 was exiting a parking lot to turn left and go westbound on Maple Avenue. Traffic had stopped to allow Vehicle-1 out, however, the driver did not observe Vehicle-2 and struck the rear passenger side of that vehicle. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
100 Block Lawyers Road, NW -- June 18, 12:43 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Lawyers Road near the entrance to Money & King Funeral Home. Vehicle-1 was exiting the shopping center parking lot on Lawyers Road, attempting to turn left to go northbound on Lawyers. As Driver-1 entered the roadway he struck Vehicle-2 pushing it into the fence at Money & King, causing significant damage to both the fence and Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
127 Center Street, South -- June 18, 4:47 p.m. A driver left their vehicle legally parked in a parallel space in the parking lot next to Town Hall. When the driver returned to the vehicle they found damage to the left front bumper where it appears it was struck by a vehicle either parking, or leaving the parking space in front of theirs. The other driver did not leave their information.
Maple Avenue and Follin Lane, SE -- June 19, 9:15 a.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling northbound on Follin Lane, turning left to go westbound on Maple Avenue. Vehicle-2 was exiting the Westwood Country Club parking lot to cross Maple Avenue and go southbound on Follin Lane. As Driver-1 began her turn she struck Vehicle-2 causing significant damage to both vehicles. Both drivers were transported by rescue personnel with nonlife-threatening injuries. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
200 Block Maple Avenue, East -- June 19, 9:44 a.m. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue approaching the intersection of Glyndon Street. Vehicle-1 was in the left lane; Vehicle-2 was in the center turn lane. As Driver-1 attempted to enter the left turn lane she struck the passenger side of Vehicle-2.
