Vienna Police Highlights July 13 – 19, 2018

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from July 13 – 19, 2018.

INCIDENTS

Fraud -- 200 Block of Oak Street, SW Between June 1 at 12 a.m. and July 2, 12 a.m. A resident reported that someone was able to successfully open several bank accounts without his consent or knowledge using his personal information.

Grand Larceny -- 200 Block of Windover Avenue, NW Between June 1 at 12 p.m. and July 17 at 12 p.m. A resident reported that some jewelry was stolen from her residence. This case is actively being investigated.

Vehicle Tampering -- 200 Block of Harmony Dr

Grand Larceny -- 200 Block of Locust Street, SE July 12 between 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. A resident reported that a sofa was stolen from the hallway of his apartment complex.

Vehicle Tampering -- 400 Block of Kramer Drive, SE Between July 12 at 1:30 p.m. and July 13 at 10 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered their unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it.

Vehicle Tampering -- 500 Block of Kramer Drive, SE Between July 12, 5 p.m. and July 13 at 8:45 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered their unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it.

Petit Larceny -- 500 Block of Wolftrap Road, SE Between July 12 at 7 p.m. and July 13 at 9 a.m. A resident reported a larceny of loose change and currency from their vehicle. The resident had left the vehicle locked with the windows lowered a small amount.

Petit Larceny -- 100 Block of Saint Andrews Drive, NE Between July 12 at 7 p.m. and July 13 at 7:15 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered their unlocked vehicle and stole loose change.

Stolen Vehicle -- 1000 Block of Echols Street, SE Between July 12 at 7 p.m. and July 14 at 3 p.m. A resident reported his vehicle stolen from his driveway.

Petit Larceny -- 900 Block of Kramer Drive, SE Between July 12 at 8 p.m. and July 13 at 10 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle, rummaged through it and stole some loose change.

Stolen Vehicle / Vehicle Tampering -- 100 Block of Wolftrap Road, SE Between July 12 at 8 p.m. and July 13 at 7 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered their unlocked vehicle and rummaged through it. Their second vehicle, which was left unlocked with the keys in the glovebox, was stolen. A green mountain bike was in the stolen vehicle and was also missing.

Petit Larceny -- 1000 Block of Westbriar Drive, NE Between July 12 at 8 p.m. and July 13 at 9 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered their vehicle and stole loose change.

Fraud -- 100 Block of Saratoga Way, NE July 14, 10:46 a.m. A resident received an email from an unknown person using her boss’ email header. The email requested the citizen purchase Apple iTunes gift cards as part of a court case settlement. The resident purchased the cards and emailed the relevant card information back to the person. It was later determined the email was fraudulent.

Found Property -- Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South July 14, 12:26 p.m. A resident’s vehicle was stolen last month. The vehicle has since been recovered and returned to the resident. The resident reported that he found a toolkit in the vehicle that did not belong to him.

Suspicious Person -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West, July 14, 12:43 a.m. Officers spoke to a man and a woman who were having a verbal dispute in the parking lot.

Suspicious Event -- 100 Block of Moore Avenue, SW July 14, 1 p.m. A resident received an email from someone stating they had hacked her computer and retrieved personal information on her. The email also stated they had accessed all of the resident’s contacts and accounts and were demanding money from her.

Petit Larceny -- 500 Block of Roland Street, SW Between July 14 at 2 p.m. and July 15 at 8:30 a.m. A resident reported that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and stole US currency from it.

Trespassing -- Petco 225 Maple Avenue, East July 14, 3:35 p.m. An employee and two customers had a civil dispute over the purchase of a fish. The employee requested the customers leave the store after they became verbally abusive. However, they refused to leave. An officer responded and advised the customers that they were trespassed from the store and if they returned they may be charged.

Vehicle Tampering -- 900 Block of Maple Avenue, East, July 14, 3:45 p.m. A citizen advised he returned to his parked vehicle to find a woman standing next to it with his driver’s side door open. The woman quickly got into the passenger side of a vehicle parked next to his, and the two occupants drove away. Nothing appeared to have been taken from the citizen’s vehicle.

Arrest – Drunk in Public - Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South July 14, 6:44 p.m. Ofc. Williams responded to the police department when a citizen’s vehicle pulled into the rear lot. Two women and a man exited the vehicle. The man showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody. It was determined that the three individuals, who were all related, were leaving a restaurant in Fairfax County when they became involved in a domestic dispute. The two women claim the dispute escalated when the man assaulted them. Ofc. Williams arrested the 61-year-old man from Kingsley Road, SW in Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk In Public. The two women were advised to follow up with the Fairfax County Police regarding the domestic assault that occurred in their jurisdiction.

Welfare Check -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West, July 15, 3:28 a.m. An officer responded to check on the welfare of a person at the hotel who is continuously calling the police department. The person advised the officer he was not in need of any assistance. Mental health services were notified to follow up with the person.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block of John Marshall Drive, NE July 15, 10:09 a.m. A resident received an email from a person claiming they had put a virus on his computer and retrieved personal information on him. The person was demanding payment through Bitcoin, or they would release the information.

Assist Fire/EMS -- Pleasant Street, NW / Windover Avenue, NW July 15, 1:07 p.m. A person was found lying on the ground unconscious. Medics performed CPR and transported the forty-eight-year-old South Carolina resident to a local hospital. He was later pronounced deceased. There were no signs of trauma. This case is actively being investigated.

Petit Larceny -- 700 Block of Cottage Street, SW Between July 16, 7 a.m. and July 18, 8:19 a.m. A resident reported that someone stole her US flag.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block of Plum Street, SW July 16, 9 a.m. A resident reported a suspicious phone call.

Open Door -- Parkwood School 601 Marshall Road, SW July 16, 9:40 a.m. Officers responding to an alarm found an open door at the school. The building was checked, and nothing appeared to have been disturbed.

Suspicious Event 1-- Outback Steakhouse 315 Maple Avenue East July 16, 2 p.m. A citizen reported a suspicious event.

Day Tow Notice -- 600 Block of Moorefield Road, SW July 17, 9:17 a.m. Officers responded to a complaint of a parked truck with trash in the rear. The truck had been parked for an extended period of time. A 10-day tow tag was placed on the truck.

Suspicious Person -- Royal Pawn 303 Maple Avenue West July 17, 3:05 p.m. An employee reported a suspicious person. The person had left the area prior to police arriving on scene.

Grand Larceny -- Marco Polo 345 Maple Avenue West July 18 6:30 p.m. A work truck was broken into and a piece of equipment was stolen.

Assist Fire/EMS -- 7-11 425 Maple Avenue East July 18 9:00 p.m. Officers responded to a report of an unresponsive person inside a vehicle. Medics transported the person to a local hospital as a precaution. The person was in stable condition.

Juvenile -- Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street South July 18, 10:58 p.m. Officers met with a teenager and a parent and assisted them with some concerns.

Arrest - Driving While Intoxicated - 386 Maple Avenue East July 18, 11:45 a.m. MPO Tremont responded to a parking lot accident, and while talking to the driver of the striking vehicle, MPO Tremont detected signs of intoxication. After failing field sobriety tests, MPO Tremont arrested the 20-year-old woman from Dixon Court in Woodbridge, Va. She was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated. A warrant was issued and served, and the woman was remanded to the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department.

Suspicious Event -- 400 Block of West Court, NW July 19, 3:58 p.m. A resident reported a series of suspicious events involving some family members.

Arrest - Domestic Assault - 300 Block of Orchard Street, NW July 19, 9:25 p.m. Police and medics were dispatched to an unknown domestic situation at a residence. Upon arrival Officers located an injured male and elderly female. After interviewing all the parties involved in the incident, Officers arrested a 57-year-old man from Orchard Street, NW in Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Assault and Battery – Family Member. A warrant and a Protective Order were issued and served. The man was remanded to the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department.

CRASHES

Cottage Street, SW and Yeonas Drive, SW -- July 13, 2:31 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Cottage Street approaching Yeonas Drive. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Yeonas Drive crossing over Cottage Street. Vehicle-1 entered the intersection and struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Cottage Street, SW and Yeonas Drive, SW -- July 16, 8:16 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Cottage Street approaching Yeonas Drive. Vehicle-1 was traveling southbound on Cottage Street approaching Yeonas Drive. Vehicle-1 attempted to make a left turn onto Yeonas drive and struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons for Failing to yield right away - left turn.

Maple Avenue West and Courthouse Road, SW -- July 16, 10:06 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue West approaching the intersection with Courthouse Road SW. Vehicle-1(Motorcycle) was traveling in the same direction directly behind vehicle-2 at a high rated speed. Vehicle-1 rear-ended vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued three summonses: Following Too Closely, Expired State Registration and Driving with a Suspended or Revoked License.

Lawyers Road, NW / Malcolm Road, NW -- July 19, 3:21 p.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling northbound on Lawyers Road approaching the intersection with Malcolm Road. Vehicle-2 was traveling westbound on Malcolm Road approaching the intersection with Lawyers Road. Vehicle-2 made a left turn onto Lawyers Road from Malcolm Road. Vehicle-1 attempted to make a left turn onto Lawyers Road and struck Vehicle-2. Vehicle-1 struck Vehicle2 as it was traveling northbound on Lawyers Road NW. No injuries reported on scene. No tow needed.
