The Fairfax County Police Department’s inaugural Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place on Saturday, July 21 at Reston Town Center. The event brings together law enforcement personnel and citizens to help support the athletes of Special Olympics Virginia. Funds raised will help the nonprofit organization’s mission to fund year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
With a $20 online or in person registration fee, All Torch Run participants will receive one 2018 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics t-shirt. Participants can register individually, join a team, or create their own teams, thereby making an even greater impact. Check-in for the Fun Run begins at 6 a.m. July 21, 2018.
The 1.5-mile fun run/walk will begin at the pavilion at Reston Town Center and will course down the green trail and back.
The Torch Run came about in 1981 Wichita, Kansas. Police Chief Richard LaMunyon created it as a means for law enforcement to be active in the community and support Special Olympics Kansas. It is now, as he is quoted as saying on the Special Olympics website, "a roaring flame of stability for Special Olympics athletes worldwide.”
Special Olympics Virginia is a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization and donations are tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To register as a participant or to donate online, visit https://impact.specialolympicsva.org/RTCTorchRun
