The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from March 23 – March 29, 2018.
INCIDENTS
Assist Fire/EMS -- Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane SW March 23 between 8 and 8:09 a.m. A student was transported to a hospital as a precaution due to a medical condition.
Juvenile -- 200 Block of Locust Street SE March 23, 2:02 p.m. A resident requested police to do a welfare check on her residence. Police was able to check on the residence and locate children inside her home. Police waited for the caller to arrive at the residence and take custody of the children prior to leaving the scene.
Assist Fire/EMS -- Plum Street SW March 23, 4:35 p.m. Police responded to a report of a CPR in progress. Medics were on scene prior to police arrival. The medics transported the person to the hospital.
Suspicious Event -- 120 Cherry Street SE March 23, 5:36 p.m. A driver reported that someone he knows ran him off the road. Both parties involved in the incident were interviewed. The driver wanted the incident documented.
Fraud -- 100 Block of Park Street SE March 23, 6 p.m. A resident reported that someone called his home and attempted to scam him. The caller stated he owed money to the power company and needed to pay some undisclosed amount of money.
Trespassing -- McDonald’s, 544 Maple Avenue West March 23, 10:15 p.m. A customer that would not comply with the manager’s requests was officially trespassed from the restaurant.
Suspicious Vehicle -- 100 Block of Patrick Street SE March 24, 12:03 a.m. A citizen reported a suspicious vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and spoke with the occupants. Officers determined that no violation of law was taking place.
Animal Case -- Navy Federal Credit Union 820 Follin Lane SE March 24, 8:14 a.m. A police officer responded to the area for an injured deer. A deer was struck by a vehicle and appeared to be in pain. The officer had to euthanized the deer.
Suicide Attempt -- Kingsley Road SW /Meadow Lane SW March 24, 7:06 p.m. A caller reported that an armed suicidal subject was in the Vienna area. Officers were able to locate the suicidal subject and disarmed him without incident. Officers determined that the subject was in need of medical assistance and transported him to a hospital for treatment.
Domestic Dispute -- 100 Block of Patrick Street SE March 24, 9:33 p.m. A resident requested police assistance with a domestic dispute. Officers spoke to all the parties involved and determined that no violation of law had taken place.
Shoplifting -- Sally Beauty Supply 329 Maple Avenue East March 25, 4:31 p.m. Juveniles shoplifted several items from the store. The juveniles were caught by a store employee. The employee requested police assistance. The parents were contacted and custody of the juveniles was turned over to their parents.
Domestic Dispute -- 800 Block of Cottage Street SW March 25, 9:28 p.m. A resident requested police assistance with a domestic dispute. Officers spoke to all the parties involved and determined that at this time no violation of law had taken place.
Open Door/Window -- Westwood Country Club 800 Maple Avenue East March 26, 1:13 a.m. Officers responded to an alarm call. Officers searched the business with negative results.
Service -- Lawyers Road NW / Lewis Street NW March 26, 9:24 a.m. A police officer responded to a report of a subject walking around that appeared to be lost. The officer spoke to the subject and determined that he was ok. The officer transported the subject to a local business to ensure his safe arrival.
Larceny Petit -- 300 Block of Adahi Road SE March 26 between 6 and 6:30 p.m. A resident reported that someone stole a package from his front porch that arrived while he was out of town.
Arrest - Drunk in Public - 00 Block of Patrick Street SE March 27, 1:01 a.m. Officers were dispatched to a report of an intoxicated man in the area. Officers located the subject and noticed he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. The man had trouble standing up and walking. The man could not provide his home address. The 19-year-old man without a fixed address was arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. A warrant for Drunk in Public was issued and served. The man was remanded to the custody of the Fairfax County Deputies.
Suspicious Event -- Suntrust Bank 501 Maple Avenue West March 27, 2:32 p.m. A bank representative requested an officer to assist with a possible fraud. The representative stated that a customer withdrew $9,000 in cash from his account and would not explain why. The representative thought the customer could be a victim of fraud. Police searched the area for the customer with negative results. The customer later returned to the bank and redeposited the money back into his account. The customer told police that he received a phone call from an unknown person claiming that his nephew had been arrested and needed bail money. After thinking about what the bank representative said earlier, the customer decided to call his nephew. His nephew told him he was not in jail and the customer realized that the bank representative was right all along.
Shoplifting -- Whole Foods 143 Maple Avenue East March 27, 5:29 p.m. Juveniles shoplifted some food items from the store. The juveniles were caught by the store manager. The manager requested police assistance. Police located the parents of the juveniles. The juveniles were returned to the custody of their parents.
Animal Case -- Pruitt Court SW March 28, 6 a.m. A resident was bitten by her own cat. The cat was placed on a standard ten-day quarantine.
Fraud -- Niblick Drive SE March 28, 10:05 a.m. A citizen reported that his credit union contacted him and advised that someone attempted to take out a $30,000 loan using his identity. The citizen was advised on how to protect his identity from further fraud.
Suspicious Event -- Stroke Comeback Center 145 Park Street SE March 28, 2:37 p.m. A citizen requested a police officer to document an incident that took place involving his teenage son and a patient.
Arrest - Drunk in Public - 100 Block of Patrick Street SE March 29, 12:29 a.m. A citizen requested police assistance with a fight in progress. Officers arrived on scene and separated all parties. One of the involved parties was unsteady on her feet, slurring her speech, smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage and was acting belligerent. The woman was arrested for Drunk in Public. Officers spoke to the remaining parties but they did not help with the investigation and were very vague on their statements. Officers were not able to determine with certainty if any other crime took place and left the scene without any further incidents. The 36-year-old woman from Brown Street in East Stroudsburg, Pa. was arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. A warrant for Drunk in Public was issued and served. The woman was remanded to the custody of the Fairfax County Deputies.
Fraud -- 300 Block of Maple Avenue West March 29, 5:27 p.m. A business owner reported that he received a phone call, from someone posing as a Dominion Power employee, advising him that his payments were late. The caller stated that if he did not pay his balance someone was coming in the next hour to shut the power off to the business. The owner was provided what appeared to be a local phone number to call and make payment arrangements. During the second phone call he was asked to provide additional financial information. At this time the owner got suspicious and hung up the phone. The owner then called Dominion Power directly and he was advised that his account was in good standing and that it was all a scam.
CRASHES
Accident -- Beulah Road NE / Ayr Hill Avenue NE March 21, 7:31 a.m. Driver #1 was traveling eastbound on Ayr Hill Avenue NE, Vehicle #2 was traveling southbound on Beulah Road NE. Driver #1 attempted to stop at the stop sign at Beulah Road, however, due to the snowy conditions the vehicle slid through the intersection and struck the right rear bumper of Vehicle #2.
Accident -- Center Street N / Shepherdson Lane NE March 24, 2:18 p.m. Vehicle #2 advised they were traveling behind another vehicle that slowed abruptly to make a turn onto Shepherdson Lane. Vehicle #1 also stated the other vehicle slowed down to turn however Vehicle #1 struck Vehicle #2 in the rear.
Hit and Run -- 319 Nutley Street NW March 26, 5 a.m. A mailbox was hit between the hours of 0500 and 0700 on 3/26/2018.
Accident -- Maple Avenue West / Lawyers Road NW March 26, 12:57 p.m. Vehicles #1 and #2 were traveling southbound on Maple Avenue West nearing the intersection of Lawyers Road NW in the left travel lane. Driver #2 advised she was stopped at the time of impact. Driver #1 advised traffic had been stopped then started again. He was following too closely when Vehicle #2 stopped again for stopped traffic. Driver #1 was unable to stop in time to avoid impact. The front bumper of Vehicle #1 struck the rear bumper of Vehicle #2.
Hit and Run -- 168 Maple Avenue West March 24, 12:50 p.m. Vehicle #1 was parked in front of 168 Maple Avenue West when the driver's side was struck by an unknown vehicle. The owner of vehicle #1 stated that upon parking his vehicle, there was not another vehicle parked on his left side. Accident -- Lawyers Road SW / Church Street NW March 28, 5:30 p.m. Vehicle #1 was making a left turn from Church Street NW onto Lawyers Road NW and collided with Vehicle #2 which was making a left turn from Lawyers Road NW onto Church Street NW.
Accident -- 820 Follin Lane SE March 29, 3:41 p.m. Driver #1 was traveling north on Follin Lane SE in front of 820 Follin Lane SE. As he attempted to round the curved road he stated he locked the brakes by accident causing him to cross the center lane and lay his motorcycle down. Driver #1 had minor cuts to his leg and was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
