Strong performances and a number of record-breaking swims by South Lakes High School swimmers helped the Seahawks close out their season on a positive note at the VHSL State Championships, Feb. 16-17 at George Mason University. This season marks the last for Coach Scott Brown after coaching the team for 23 years.
Junior Emma Bulger brought home the first-place championship in diving, while three swimmers and a relay team set new school records. The boys team finished seventh overall and the girls finished 16th at the state conference.
Record-setting swims were recorded at the state championship by freshman Anna Redican, who took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a school record time of 55.71; Michael George, who took seventh with a new school record time of 58.08 in the 100-yard breaststroke; and Gianmichel D’Allesandro, who set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.69. The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Hunter Ellis, Michael George, Tyler Ellis, and D’Allessandro finished third and set a new school record with a time of 1:353.14.
Other highlights from the state meet included:
- Fourth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle for junior Jack Edgemond.
- Seventh place for the boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of D’Allessandro, Robby Cordts, Edgemond, and Tyler Ellis.
- Eighth place in the 100-yard freestyle for D’Allessandro.
- Tenth place for the girls 400-yard freestyle relay team of Emily Landeryou, Claudia Reverte, Caitlyn King, and Sophia Landeryou.
