Fairfax City Special Election: Ellie Schmidt

You have a choice in the special election on Feb 7. There are a lot of similarities among the candidates, but there are also some real differences. Some differences are obvious and some, not so obvious.

My opponents and I have discussed our differences in recent public meetings on the University Drive extension and the Chain Bridge Road sidewalk project. I voted in opposition on both of these issues, while my opponents voted in favor. I am concerned about issues such as high-density redevelopment, preservation of our residential community, traffic congestion, commercial vacancies and economic development.

We must carefully consider density, size and scale as we review new development projects. What do we want the City to look like? We don't want to look like the Halstead in Dunn Loring or the Mosaic in Merrifield. The City Council has approved projects with over 1,200 new housing units, including over 1,000 rental apartments. We need to evaluate the impact of these projects on our traffic congestion and City services and infrastructure.

I had concerns about the Scout on the Circle project. I voted in opposition to the project for several reasons. I did not want the reduction of commercial square footage – once converted to residential, you can’t get commercial square footage back – and I was concerned about the building height. The project was not ready. At the time, it was said not to let perfection get in the way of good. My opponents voted in favor of this project. As we can see, it just wasn't ready.

I ask you to examine our voting records as you make your decision. As a City Council member, I have considered City matters with a thoughtful and balanced approach. I have carefully considered the needs of our current residents, as well as the impact on our future. I have listened to ideas and concerns and have been visible, open and approachable and will continue to be so.

I am committed to openness in government, inclusiveness with the community and with my colleagues on the dais. Communication and civic engagement with all citizens and business owners is essential. I will continue to be out and present in the community, participating, listening and involving our citizens and businesses.

My professional background as a business person demonstrates my experience in finance, strategic planning, communication and leadership. In addition, I have served this community through my involvement in service organizations, boards and commissions in a number of leadership capacities since my days as a student at Fairfax High School.

We have a unique community here in the City of Fairfax and I am proud to be a part of it. I ask for your vote on Feb. 7.
