Arlingtonians came out on the evening of Oct. 19 to register for the Arlington Turkey Trot. Several of the beneficiaries of the fundraising effort were at the event at the Crystal City Sports Pub on 23rd Street South, speaking about the work they do, as well as some residents who benefited from the efforts of local Arlington safety net organizations such as Bridges to Independence and Arlington Thrive. Bridges to Independence provides services for homeless women/families and those at risk. Bridges offers support for all family members, helping them attain stability and move forward into self-sufficiency. They also reach out to at-risk families and help them avoid homelessness. They were originally called the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless. Arlington Thrive is another nonprofit that seeks to prevent homelessness by providing emergency aid to those who can’t pay rent, often because they are physically unable to work temporarily.
