The Alexandria City School Board issued the following statement to ACPS staff and families:
The Alexandria City School Board, in accordance with ACPS 2020, strives to support students and staff in the pursuit of excellence. For every student to succeed, the School Board governs budget and policies that are used in our day-to-day work. ACPS policies over the past two years have been updated to capture our inclusive and diverse culture, striving to promote and protect the principles of inclusiveness and equity throughout our school division.
On behalf of the students and families in ACPS and the citizens of Alexandria City, the Alexandria City School Board would like to reaffirm:
Its policies on non-discrimination (AC), educational philosophy (AD) and anti-harassment (GBA-JFHA) to foster an atmosphere of inclusiveness and prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, ancestry, disability, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation;
Its commitment to ensure that all students and school personnel, including all immigrants, are treated with dignity and respect;
Its work to continue building bridges of understanding and mutual respect among the diverse members of our community;
Its vow to oppose intolerance and fear that threatens the diversity, safety and strength of our schools; and
Its pledge to ensure that all students and school personnel within our city limits are accorded equal protection under the law and that discrimination on the basis of national origin is prohibited.
Education for all is a defining promise of American democracy. The School Board took an oath to uphold the United States Constitution in our work for the Commonwealth of Virginia. As an extension of our oath, we encourage you to celebrate the inclusiveness and diversity that contributes to the strength, safety and quality of life of everyone at ACPS.
