The McLean Citizens Association presented the Outstanding Character Award for Teenagers at McLean Day on May 21 to recognize extraordinary community service.
The honorees had to meet specific criteria, including performing volunteer work that brought about no material benefit for themselves, entailed a substantial time commitment, and benefitted others in the community.
“In society today you see how disabled people are mistreated all the time, and I just think that’s horrible. It’s really great to see the Special Olympics athletes smiling out on the field when they score a goal or just even complete a pass,” Special Olympics softball and soccer coach, Relay For Life participant, and freshman at McLean High Bryce Liquerman said.
The teens felt they learned valuable skills from participating.
“I think it’s important for people to volunteer so they can learn to communicate and just give others hope for life,” Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, President of the Red Cross Club, and senior at McLean High Leena Raza said.
Some teens choose to help others due to personal tragedy.
“My father passed away in January of last year from lung cancer. He was diagnosed a little before my freshman year, and that’s really what motivates me and encourages me to participate in Relay For Life,“ senior and Langley High’s Executive Director for the Relay For Life Will Pfadenhauer said.
