The beauty of Dead Run Stream Valley Park in McLean was on full display last Thursday, May 19.
Cardinals sang, and deer came close when Matthew Meyers, Watershed Projects Implementation Branch Chief for Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Division, gave the most recent plans for the county’s stream restoration project of Dead Run.
About a dozen community members walked the site with Meyers from McLean Central Park to Elizabeth Drive.
Meyers and engineers brought detailed site plans to show how the stream valley would be restored to health.
Two hard copies of the plans and overall project maps have also been placed at the Dolley Madison Library, near the information desk, as well as the McLean Governmental Center.
Neighbors have gorgeous views along the stream valley park. They continue to advocate for the least amount of intrusion as well as the best possible protection of trees and landscaping when the project takes place.
A stream team was convened to ensure that the community had the opportunity to voice opinions and be involved in the project.
Dead Run is impaired and in poor quality, Meyers told the community nearly one year ago. The stream restoration project would improve water quality by reducing sediment and nutrient loads, stabilize stream banks to reduce bank erosion and reduce tree loss in the future, improve aquatic habitat and restore and enhance the stream buffer, officials said.
There will be another meeting with the task force before the county unveils its 95 percent design plans, tentatively scheduled for the fall.
