History Series Presents ‘Cartography of Northern Virginia’

As part of the monthly history series, the Reston Historic Trust and Museum presents “The Cartography of Northern Virginia” on Thursday, March 10, 7 p.m. at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery in the Reston Community Center Lake Anne. Come learn about early settlements and roads in the area and how the Northern Virginia region took shape from 1608 to the mid-nineteenth century.

The speaker for the evening will be Shelley Mastran, who holds a Ph.D in Geography.

No reservations or tickets are needed for this event.

Dresses, Accessories Needed for Prom Dress Drive

Reston Community Center is accepting dresses, shoes, jewelry, handbags, shawls and other accessories for students as part of the annual Diva Central Prom Dress Drive. Donations are tax deductible and may be dropped off at either Reston Community Center facility through Saturday, March 26. All donations are appreciated but should be in good condition, no older than 5 years (circa 2011), and should be dry cleaned before they are donated. If dry cleaning is not possible, indicate at the time of drop-off. Dress donations will benefit students in Reston and surrounding areas.

This year’s prom dress giveaway event is planned for Saturday, April 23, from 12 to 6 p.m. at RCC Lake Anne, 1609-A Washington Plaza in Reston. All local high school students are invited to attend and “shop” for dresses, shoes and other accessories for free. Registration is not required.

Scout Collects Welcome Home Kits for Formerly Homeless

Over the next five months, a nonprofit organization called Pathway Homes will be moving formerly homeless people into new homes. Life Scout Will McLauchlin needs your help rounding up cleaning items for their new homes as part of his Eagle Scout Project. He has put up an Amazon wish-list of all the items he needs for Home Welcome Kits, https://goo.gl/uqk4Gd.

How to help

  • Send anything you would like to buy from the Amazon wish-list. Or you can send similar items from any store.

Volunteers Needed for Food Packing Event

Assistance League of Northern Virginia invites community members to help pack food for the Weekend Food for Kids program which benefits 1500 schoolchildren who receive reduced-price meals during the week. The next food packing event is at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 at Dominion Virginia Power, 3072 Centreville Road, in Herndon. Arrive at 9:30 a.m. if you would like to help with setup.
