Alexandria Column: Maintaining Memory

Commentary–Senior Services of Alexandria

If you are a fellow baby-boomer, does an occasional lapse in memory sometimes make you wonder if it is something more serious than a momentary distraction? Are you unsure about the best way to ease the frustration that can come with caring for a loved one who is suffering from dementia? Would you like to learn more about the latest medical advances related to dementia and its treatment? The next Senior Speaker Series event will address these questions, and share concrete advice on methods to stimulate memory and brain activity.

Senior Services of Alexandria’s Feb. 10 Speaker Series is going to focus on “Maintaining Memory and Coping with Its Loss.” The event takes place at Beatley Central Library at 5005 Duke St. from 10 a.m. – noon. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

SSA is partnering with local experts from Inova Alexandria Hospital, Arden Courts of Annandale, Insight Memory Care Center, and Alexandria’s Division on Aging and Adult Services Senior Mental Health Department to provide useful information on the different types of memory loss. The workshop will include interactive exercises on ways to stimulate the brain to keep it active and lessen memory loss. Participants will also learn about the “10 Warning Signs” related to dementia, and how exercise and healthy eating can make a difference.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments with healthy brain food will be served. Please register at www.seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-836-4414, ext. 110.
