Help Tell the Story of Nation’s Veterans
Historic Vienna, Inc. will host a free information and training session on the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project (VHP) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 at the Patriot Hall at American Legion Dyer Gunnell Post 180, 330 Center Street N. Vienna. The project’s mission is to collect, preserve, and make accessible personal accounts of American wartime veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. The Veterans History Project director, Col. Bob Patrick, USA (Ret.) will teach attendees how to collect veterans stories, including how to conduct oral histories and submit to VHP. Veterans are invited to participate but you need not be a veteran to attend. Students of history are encouraged to participate.
Historic Vienna, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established by the Vienna Town Council in 1976, to preserve and promote Vienna’s heritage and promote preservation and interpretation of historically significant places and events through exhibits, programs, and special events. HVI operates the Freeman Store and Museum at 131 Church Street, NE in Vienna.
Girls on the Run Spring Registration Open
Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia is registering girls in third through eighth grade for its unique, curriculum-based after school program. By using a curriculum that creatively integrates running with life lessons, Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia supports girls in developing the confidence and character they need to become strong, healthy women.
In Oakton and Vienna, Spring 2016 teams will be hosted at the following schools at Oakton Elementary, Flint Hill Elementary, Waples Mill Elementary, Cunningham Park Elementary and Louise Archer Elementary.
Girls on the Run NOVA offers discounts for active duty and retired military families as well as families registering two or more siblings. Financial aid is also available based on household income.
